I will be moving into a new apartment shortly and getting Comcast Performance Internet. I can rent a wireless router from them for $7/mo or get my own.

My laptop uses an Intel 6300 card. Comcast says there is something about DOCSIS and the device I use "matters." They offer a list of options here but no prices.

Renting would cost me $42 for the first six months. I'd like to get something in that price range so I break even if I decide to cancel the service after promo deal ends.

    Suggestions?

Are they renting a router to you or a modem-router combo.
You can't buy a good router for $42 but for slightly more than that you can buy a good one- that said it works only if you get a cable modem from them for free.
If you don't this means you'd have to buy it too and that makes the whole thing way too expensive to fit in $42.

LOL OK I KNOW A TON ABOUT COMCAST.. docsis is the basicly the formula they are using on the network and they are up to 3.0

one of the best modems to get is a Motorola.. docsis 3.0 and you can get one from frys.. if you rent it from them you will be paying 84 bucks a year for the modem and the one they supply is ussaly crap or not very good and most often second hand..

for about the same price you can buy your modem and own it.. and it will be loads better than what they supply to you..

They rented out some kind of awful RCA cablemodem box to my nephew!! Be sure to buy your own Motorola modem, and any good WiFi/router...
I run on Comcast too and bought my own Motorola SB6-something modem...

Okay, sorry for the late reply. I would need to rent a modem and a wireless router. Any within my price range of $85?

EDIT: To be clear, they would ONLY rent me the cable modem. I would still need to buy a wireless router so a recommendation for either is appreciated.

EDIT 2: These are the two items I'm looking at purchasing. For $88 this modem is right in my price range.

I have to buy a wireless router no matter what. This router for $50 bucks looks very tempting.

Leave that Medialink alone- if you want a good router for around $50 go for a TP-Link TL-WT1043ND

I got this modem-router combo. Considering Comcast gives you a used modem anyway, you could buy a used one of these for $77.95.
