Enable the WEP encription by feeding in the password .This will give you four network keys.Log one of the key at the network key prompt.

DO NOT enable wep it will CHEW up your bandwidth, and if someone wanted to get into your network they will, wep or not, you can steal the wep key right out of the air if a client is connected the AP.

the best way to keep your network running fast and breakin retardant

is Disable SSID, change your SSID to something other than letters, symbols numbers and letters if possible (IE: "e=6mkd)56")

enable mac filter so only the computers you want can access the network.BTW wep encryption also takes a hit on your CPU, if you max out your 108mbit connection (the 624 can do 108) it will bring your cpu to its knees as well transfer slower than hell.

It's personal opinion to use wep or not. I personally have no problems with 64 bit encryption. Even playing online games and watching streaming video, no glitches... Just see how it works with your setup.

Yeah, it might be hard for an Intel prc to handle wep :)

I use WEP encryption with 128 bit key,and have seen no lag in performance.

I have disabled broadcast SSID,with no problems.

But MAC filtering caused disconection and hassles.

    Changed default password too.

I get full 56 mbps connectivity in my whole house with b/g Netgear router

i just use the mac filtering so that only (well when i still had the I9200) that mac address could connect to the wireless network and it worked find. Besides i usually bounced of the neighbors, since he has cable [ :D]

wep keys are useless, you can use airsnort to crack em with ease. also have you guys benchmarked the diffrence with and without wep enabled as well as cpu usage?

well heres one for bandwith, (700kB/s w/o wep) (554kB/s w/ wep)

    http://www.myworldhardware.com/v4/reviews/104/bm3.jpg

big diffrence if you ask me. 146kB/s is approx half the bandwidth of most basic broadband internet services. my cable connection is maxed at 375KB/s a dsl connection is approx 300-350KB/s typically

Unless you have multiple wi-fi users loged on to the same router, the extra bandwith does not matter to a single home user.

you guys know that while a WEP key can be hacked, it still takes several HOURS of sniffing in order to do it. Also, another alternative is WPA which does not have an "easy" crack such as WEP.

Also, it is possible to spoof MAC addresses as easily as it is to spoof IP addresses. Also, disabling the SSID broadcast only prevents it from being seen in Windows' wireless solution. I can pick up "hidden" SSID's in my Intel's wireless management software and also in NetStumbler.

That's why a combination of changing/disabling SSID, changing admin password (and absolute MUST), MAC address filtering, and WPA (or at least WEP if your hardware doesn't support WPA) are the recommended solution for a secure network. The basic idea is to have your network a whole lot more trouble to get into as opposed to the guy next door.

If your that freaked out about someone getting in your network maybe you shouldn't have a network. Actually, maybe you shouldn't go outside.
