I love my one-year-old iMac to death, but lately, it has been suffering from a crippling networking issue. Whether connected to a wireless or wired network, the Internet will run fine for a while, then all of a sudden cut out until I either unplug my ethernet cable or disable and enable my AirPort card.

The issues seems to be with the DNS because while loading websites is slow, Internet speed tests show my connection running at 12 mbps. I tried using OpenDNS, but that doesn't solve the problem.

I thought it might be a compatibility issue with my Comcast Netgear router, but connecting to other wireless networks with different routers causes the same problem, not to mention the computer has worked fine on my network before.

Any thoughts on how to fix this short of doing an OS X reinstall?

The only thing I can think of that might cause such issue is if the Operating System is turning off the device in the background to save power. I know in Windows OS there's the option in Device Manager to disable that but I have no idea if Macs have that option.

    Just a thought!

Does the OS X provide any troubleshooting or diagnostic/performance logs that might have logged an event like the wireless card being shut down? For example, in Windows, there are the so-called "event logs" which would most likely have logged something connected to such an event on a PC.

Had a similar problem on a recent call...owner had some PC issues and while i was there, he brought his daughter's Imac out and said it was behaving similarly.

He asked what I would do and I told him I'd use the Imac as a boat anchor....

Then I ran the OSX update utility and the problem went away

I find a lot of people don't update their Macs because they think Macs are so perfect that they don't need updating....
