I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 notebook, with an Intel 4695agn wireless card. I just bought a Linksys WRT310N router (gigabit edition). When powering up the notebook, the wireless connects at 130Mbps but within a few minutes drops to between 13 and 54, rarely going above 39 and never going above 130. I have done online chats with Dell and Linksys (several hours with each), and nobody can tell me what the problem is. Does anyone have any idea?.....please!!! I'm really frustrated. I previously had a Linksys 2.4Ghz router with speedbooster and didn't have any problems. But I figured...new laptop+N wireless card+N router = wicked quick. Instead, it's slower than ever. Please help!

The first thing I would do is update the router firmware.

Then I would install newer drivers (if you haven't done already) for your Intel 4965AGN card.

After that I would make sure your network is secure, meaning to enable WPA2 encryption on your wifi connection.

It does sound like firmware problems.....

But, the Intel card doesn't not play nice w/ the single band d-link or linksys routers- the best you will get is 130mbps...... to get the max, 270-300mbps, you'll need a dual band router so that the card can also utilize the 5.0Ghz channel--> or get a Linksys Card/Adapter.....

    Thanks All,
The firmware upgrade was successful, but it did not correct the problem. I returned the Linksys router and bought the dual band Netgear router. I haven't installed it yet, but when I do, I'll let you know if it took care of the problem.
    Thanks again!

    good luck

I had good luck w/ netgear N (single band) b4 we got the D-link dir-655

They are a good router and easy to configure.........

Be sure and use the WPA2 encryption..........

Be sure to enable both the 2.4ghz and 5Ghz on both the Intel card and Router..

    Hello yet again,
Well, still no luck. Installed the Net-Gear dual band and was still only getting 39 or lower speeds. Then every 20 minutes or so it would drop me from the network. I again, returned it and bought the D-Link, Dir-655. There are two laptops in the house. The other, a Sony Vaio, with the same wireless card. The Sony connects at 130 Mpbs (obviously N). Mine will only connect at G, 54Mpbs. I mirrored the settings on each card, so I just don't get it. The only difference, aside from brand, and some minor technical variations, is that the Sony is running Vista, and mine is running XP pro SP2. Any additional advice would be greatly appreciated. My laptop specs are below.
    Dell, Inspiron 1520.
    Intel Core 2 Duo, T8300 @ 2.4Ghz, 3.5 GB RAM. XP Pro, SP2, Wireless card: Intel 4695agn.
    Help...
    Thanks!

I have the WRT600N (154 at amazon with free super saver shipping) out of the box with my 4965 AGN it got 270Mbps. The farther away you get the worse the speed will be. Test it at close range first like a few feet before just plopping it down somewhere and roaming about.

I went through two DIR-655 both had problems out of the box. The first the WiFi circuitry crapped out in 10 minutes. The second had a different problem so I just gave up. It would only connect at 130 Mbps out of the box. As they were messed up I didnt bother with tweaking to try for better speeds.

Ok, now I'm completely frustrated. I returned the DIR-655 and bought the Linksys WRT600N (dual band). The laptop (intel 4695agn) only connects at G. I spent 1.75 hours on the phone with Dell. They tried everything I had already tried, and surprise...nothing worked. After changing all the router settings and wireless card settings, it either connects at G or nothing. If the router settings for both bands are set to N only, the wireless laptop simply doesn't connect at all. When changing the router settings back to G or mixed, the wireless laptop connects but only at 54mbps..G. In Intel PROSet it shows a, g and n, but again...it only connects at G. I simply do not get it. What is the problem?

    Dell, inspiron 1520
    Intel Core 2 Duo, T8300, 2.4ghz
    4MB memory (3.5mb)
    Windows XP Professional
    Intel 4695agn wireless card
Wireless Router: Linksys WRT600N, dual band

802.11n is not a finalized spec for a reason...a lot of odd stuff happens with it, and I got tired of messing with it and went back to 802.11g.

D-LINK DGL 4500 in 5ghz mode works great for T61p and R61 both with Intel 4695AGN.

IMO it's all about configuring it.

Both of my Thinkpads show 300mpbs excellant signal.
    N mode.

First of all, did you give it two seperate SSID's so you can specify the N one to connect to?

Is your N on the 5ghz band only?

Did you get the latest drivers from DELL or Intel? They will also flash the firmware on the card to their latest and greatest.

Did you set up any security? If so turn all of it off until you can establish a connection to the N side then add it in.

Out of the box and within about 10 feet I set up two SSIDs'. I set up the 5ghz band's SSID to be like the 2.4 ghz one with - N at the end and I connected at 270Mbps to the WRT600N.

I saw my G 2.4 ghz band channel and my N 5ghz channel. I clicked connect to the N side and that was it. I added WPA2 later. If you used that stupid config CD then reset the router and just connect to its admin web page 192.168.1.1 and set up two SSID's and go from there.

I don't know what your distance is (I assume close for testing) but if you get too far away ~25-30 ft you can connect to the N channel but won't get top speeds.

OK I screwed around with my new lappy with this same card for almost 2 weeks. After using multiple routers & wiring all over my house I FINALLY ended up with this. Both D-link: DIR-655, & DGS-2205 Switch. I placed my modem strategically between the 2 areas I needed internet. I ran the main line to the router & put that where I got really good connection at about 30-40 ft away one level lower than me ( speeds are between 78-130 at all times) ran one longer wire back to the room where other puters are & plugged in the switch, plugged in both puters there & the printer made sure all the puters/printer have same IP & everything is fabulous. Granted the speeds arent lightning fast per the reading but going to speedtest, with the other routers I could not get above 800kbps on download I am currently running between 14,000- 18,000 kbps on Download. it takes me about 2 min to download a 65mb download. I also have not beend disconnected from my game site yet either.

    Hello!!!

Well, Finally I'm up and running at 270 Mbps. Thanks so much to everyone for the great tips and advice. Sparky 1720....Resetting the router to the factory defaults and then starting over without the CD, did the trick. I set up the 2 bands seperately without any security and once I was connected at the higher speed, I then set up the security. It's working fine now. On the Netgear dual band I set the 2 bands up seperate but it didn't work. Buth then again, I used the CD and had security. Again....many thanks. Spending hours and hours on the phone with Dell, Linksys, etc... and not one of them ever mentioned trying what you had me try. Very sad.
Thanks again!!!! I really appreciate it!!

Great, congratulations. In my case my bottleneck is the router from verizon, it supports g only, so 54Mbps.

    Hello carterj11 & sparky 1720 -

I am in the same boat with a T61 4695agn nic. So far the WRt600n doesn't
go beyond 54 Mbps (g) . I have tried the factory defaults/reset already. Didn't work.

Can you tell me when you see the wireless connection status on your PC, does it show up as 801.11a connection for 5Ghz band or does it show up as 802.11n ?
In my laptop it always shows up as an 802.11a connnection when I mouse over the Wifi signal bars?

I don't have a 5GHz connection, just 2.4GHz. In my xp laptop is says 54Mbps, and in my vista I have to open the status to see the 54Mbps. Perhaps you are talking of the adapters, there it would be described the wifi technology.
