When I close the lid of my laptop and it goes into standby and then I open it back up later, the internet does not work. I have to unplug the ethernet cable and then plug it back in to get the connection established. I am on a campus network. I have SP2 installed. I tried searching the forums, but I kept getting some kind of error and it would not work. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

When going into StandBy mode, the network connection is cut and your IP is released. You need to get a new IP before you can start surfing. Just goto the command prompt and type IPCONFIG /RENEW and it should aquire a new IP address.

If you don't like the command prompt, you could always download a similar program as WINIPCFG that was included with Win98 from Microsoft. This one will work the exact same way in XP.

Just don't go into Stand By mode. I don't really find it that useful. If you're close enough to an network jack, then you're close enough to a power outlet to plug your computer in. If you're wanting to turn off your screen, just change the setting under Power Managerment, and tell the computer not to go into standby when the lid to closed, then you won't lose your connections.

And instead of unplugging the cable, or going through a command prompty, just right click your network icon and go "Repair". That'll renew your IP.

As JimG alluded to, you can (most brands) tell your laptop not to go into standby mode, from the Power Options applet in Control Panel. They will have 2 sections on that particular tab, the first asks what you want to do when you close the laptop lid, the second asks what you want to do when you press the power button. You can set it so when you close the lid, the laptop takes no action, and when you press the power button (quickly), it goes into stanby mode (or whatever choice suits your needs).

    Cheers,

Are you closing your laptop lid because you're doing something on the 'net or b/c you're done with your machine?

After going into standby, your NIC should automatically reconnect and renew your IP...at least mine does. When hardwired, it just comes back. When wireless, there is a delay of about 10 seconds until I can use the net again.

If you're closing the lid because you're downloading or something, then you may want to disable to Standby feature.
