I have a Dell Latitude X200 laptop. Lately I have been losing passwords! That is, the computer’s memory is not retaining my passwords. I first noticed this when I had to retype my pass phrase into my D-Link wireless router program. Every time that I turn on the lap top – the pass phrase is gone!!! And, I have to retype it in order to connect to the internet. Does the motherboard have a small quarter size battery (like CMOS) that “remembers” your settings / passwords? If so, how can change the battery?
    Please help.
    Thank you.

the password for your internet connection (broadband) is stored in your modem/router not in your laptop.

Your D-Link is the problem not your laptop.

Are you losing internet passwords or BIOS settings?

This is important b/c it could be as simple as a setting in IE/FF or a CMOS battery replacement.

A router is suppose to keep all the settings and passwords even when the modem is swithched off.

Go to D-Link website and check for firmware upgrade. Try also to google because maybe this is a known problem for your modeme. You might be lucky to find a fix.

Last, modems have a longer warranty than laptops (3 years or there about). So if I was you I'll call D-Link, describe the problem. This will result on them tell you about a fix or organising a RMA.

The CMOS shouldn't affect the passwords stored within Windows. So I wouldn't worry about the battery.

I personally would remove the D-Link program and use the Windows built in manager for wireless connections. I've never had an issue with that. It's possible the D-Link program is just funky.

sorry if I'm going to upset you but no program is needed to use a modem/router....

Well unless I'm wrong D-link don't make USB modems...

Why would I be upset? :D. If ever I'm wrong please tell me!

I believe he is saying that Windows isn't remembering the encryption key, not the router. I got the impression that the D-Link program he's referring to is the one that they ship with the router that replaces the Windows connection manager.

Unless the OP means that the router itself is resetting itself? But that couldn't be the case (right?) because then it would go to an unsecured state....

Does D-Link make wifi modules for laptops? I mean I know they make cardbus wifi solution but I'm not aware that they make mini pci wifi modules.

I think the OP needs to specify if he is talking about his router and his broadband password or about not been able to use the wireless in his laptop (WPA, WPE encryption keys).

I think he needs to remove the location stored in in the manager. he may have several with the same name causing problems. Remove the location and reboot. When prompted enter the key again. And see if it will retain it. If not there is a flag set on not to auto connect.
