    Hello everyone,
    I am using a linksys wireless router and a emachine laptop. A lot of times when I can not go online on the laptop, I have to connect the modem directly to my desk top to go online then go to the setup program and clone the mac address again, then everything is working properly. Why is the router keep loosing the mac address? Anything I can do. Thank you for your time.

    Thank you Brian for replying.
    I think it is the wireless router that is loosing the mac address of my desk top. Correct me if I am wrong. When my cable modem is connected to the desk top, my ISP will recognize my desk top's mac address. Then I connect the cable modem to the wireless router and clone the Mac address for it to work. When that is done, my laptop will work fine. When my laptop can not connect wirelessly, I have to clone the desk top mac address to the wireless router again for the laptop to work again. I thought it should be trouble free once it is set up properly, did I do anything wrong? Thanks for your time.

    i don't understand why you are cloning your mac addy. if you have a wifi router, your laptop should be able to connect to it free and clear. if you are cloning your mac addy and have both computers on the lan at the same time, you are potentially causing conflicts on your network.

    you should...

    1. connect your wifi router to your cable/dsl modem
    2. plug your desktop into your wifi router via rj45
    3. connect your laptop via wifi to the wifi router

    there is no need to clone anything

    here's a diagram...

    -------
    dsl/cable modem --> wifi router --> rj45 cable --> desktop
    dsl/cable modem --> wifi router --> wifi --> laptop
    -------

    you are making things overcomplicated by cloning

    Thank you Drumfu for joining in.
    What I have now is:
    Cable modem --> wifi router --> desk top
    --> laptop x 2
    Please advise. Thanks.

    Drumfu,
    Depending on the ISP, some do require a specific MAC address to work. Using the router to clone the original MAC address may be the only way for it to work correctly.

    Crw,
    When you set the router to clone the MAC address, try having only the desktop connected at that time. There could be a conflict of some sort when multiple MAC address are present. If the router is consistently loosing the cloned MAC address, there could be a problem with the router. You may want to hope into Futureshop/BestBuy and try a new router. If the new router doesn't work (has the same problem) you can just return it. This then could be related to the ISP, maybe the found a way to detected cloned MAC addresses.
