    Hello all,

Recently i stumbled on the web on a Sputnik AP200, it says its range is up to 5 km and one guys review is he got his lappy to work at the beach some long distance from this house.

And here the internet charges are sky high!!! costs about $100 a month for internet connection where the maximum your downloads is is about 3 kbps!! (MAXIMUM). but weirdly the maximum upload rate ive got is 20 kbps! i download more than upload to get the maximum figures. So what i decided to do is get DVB Satellite service to give me at least 512 kbps but it adds another $243 a month since its a one way service, my existing connection acts as an uplink... also checked it out cheapest solution for speed!!! my neighbour lives about 50 m down the road and i was ready to share my connection with him to bring the cost down.. only 3 of my neighbours close by a standard WiFi 802.11g can reach, but only 1 is willing to pay extra!!

Anyone any ideas on how i could get by this???

I'm just curious what you need that kind of range for? It's probably cheaper to just go through your cellphone if you really need to have an internet connection from anywhere. Also mobile technology is increasing rapidly so fast bandwidth won't be a problem in the near future. Right now there are services where you can get wireless access from many public areas such as coffee shops, etc... so that's probably a better solution if you want to use your laptop at the beach. As for home use if nothing is in your area then dial up or satellite is your only hope, but otherwise just get a cable or DSL connection for about 50 bucks a month. It will be much cheaper and you won't have to share.

I'm assuming your living where land based broadband isn't avaliable. I believe there are a few good guides around. One is on O'reilly (publisher) website. They talk about using dish antennas to send signals over 10 miles. You're going to spend a bundle doing this, but I think its the only way.

Thankx, the broadband here is already wireless but 2kbps as i said. Telephone lines get cut off often and the cell phone solutions are charged in kb quite expensive downloading large files

Does your cel plan have free minutes or unlimited nights/weekends? If so, you can surf for free if you can turn off your gprs, and use the old-fashioned gsm network. I'm assuming you have a gsm network, but i think you can do this with other digital networks. Just get an internet provider with dial-up to connect. Check if there are prepaid internet cards in your area. It's slower, but no charge per kb. Better double check with your provider about this though.

Also, how far away is your neighbor, 50 meters or 50 miles? Do you have line of sight of your neighbor?
