i'm not too educated in the wireless networking department, but here goes my questions:

i have an Alienware m9750, and last month i purchased a linksys WRT160N router, and i am now looking to move forward to the draft N networking versus G for obvious reasons.

i know that when the m9750 sold, Alienware offered the Intel 4965 internal wireless adapter, but now i notice Intel has the 5100 and 5300 internal wireless adapters.

do these adapters require newer platforms to run? or can i simply plop them into my current rig? are these quality products, or should i look into something else?

if i'm not able to use the 5300 and 5100 adapters, are there better alternatives (than the intel 4965) via external adapters?

i ask this due to (from what i've read) the Intel 4965 capping out at 130Mbps connection speeds, though i would like to pull out more connectivity if i'm able to.

    thanks!

Have a look over here for 11n cards.
They also have antenna's should you venture into 3 antenna WIFI.

Keep in mind that your WRT160N is a single band 2.4GHz draft N wireless router with 2 antennas.

I'm guessing that your M9750 uses Intel Mobile 965 Express chipset. Then you shouldn't bother changing 'only' to 4965, cause the newer 5100 or 5300 works with 965 chipsets. I even have installed a 5100 card in my 945 based Atom netbook, and it works.

4965 capped at 130 Mbps due to its limitation to use only standard 20MHz channel in 2.4GHz and it will only do wide 40MHz channel in 5GHz radio band. Since your WRT160N cannot do 5GHz, then 5100 or 5300 is your answer. Cause these newer adapters can do wide 40MHz channel in 2.4GHz band which will result up to 270Mbps radio link.

And if you have read other threads in this forum, you should have known that 5100 requires 2 antennas and 5300 needs 3 antennas. So, it depends on your current setup, if your M9750 has only 2 antenna leads then it's easier to upgrade the current adapter to 5100. Or you could install the 3rd antenna for 5300, but you wouldn't get any benefit from it since your WRT160N is only a 2 antennas wireless router.
