    Hi,

Background and needs: Over the last few years I have purchased several routers for my house (two stories) and have had bad wifi connectivity when moving to far away from the router. The router is stationed upstairs and while I have no problem using the wifi in rooms 5-10m away from it, rooms on the other end of the floor and certain places downstairs have trouble with connectivity.

My current router: A few months I purchased a Netgear router: a Rangemax Dual Band Wireless-N Modem Router (DGND3300v2) as was recommended to me at a local Harvey Norman (computer store) outlet for my situation. The connectivity issues from distances further away persist with this router as well, even though I was told the Dual Band Wirless-N routers are the best you can get as far as connectivity goes.

I only have basic knowledge in terms of routers and wifi setups so I thought I would ask for some advice. What would be the ideal setup for my needs? Are there any routers available that will sufficiently cover a two story house with wifi connectivity? Do I need a second router downstairs?

I would be grateful for any help or advice.

    Thanks!
    Pepi

Depending on how much are you willing to spend- either a Linksys E4200 v1 (refurbs are reasonably priced) or a Netgear WNDR3700.
Linksys offers better range at 2.4GHz while Netgear is a lot more affordable and still very good in terms of wireless range.

if your netgear dgnd3300 supports wireless repeater mode, then i would suggest you buy another netgear, possibly the wndr3700. configure both of them to talk to each other using wireless repeater mode (found on the routerlogin.net page)..place one router on one floor and another router on the other floor. One will then act as the base station and the other one will act as the repeater. Hope this helps.
