Everytime i startup my laptop i get a window pops up telling me a Linksys router has been detected in range press next to install and setup your router. But there are no linksys routers in the vicinity. Message also comes on when wifi is disabled.
There is a checkbox that says "Do not show this window again" but it doesnt help.

Is this some adware **** or a virus? It's starting to piss me off.

Did you ever install any Linksys Software ? Sounds like a failed install of sorts that wants to continue.

Look in startup / start msconfig / use task manager to see what the process is / then maybe google. See if you can uninstall or remove it .

Does not sound like ad-ware - may be a virus I assume you have run a full virus scan.

You problably have a neighbor somewhere nearby that has a router that is within range. In my apartment I get like 4-7 different routers that I can piggyback onto. (though most are password protected or too far away to get a good signal). I don't know of a way to stop it asside from turning off your wireless network card.

    Agreed

There could be another wireless router nearby.

Go into the wireless connections, right click, and then hit "View Wireless Networks". And see if any pop up.

For now, if your not using wireless, you should disable your wireless connection and you wont get this message.

If you do use wireless, try installing it and see from there what it does. I doubt its a virus - highly

You guys think it is a neighbor somewhere nearby that has a router that is within range ? The message he states is a Linksys router has been detected in range press next to install and setup your router"

That is not what WZC would show when a new SSID appears. If he got the message worng then yeah I agree could just someone elses SSID floating out there (with a default ssid of linksys) and his computer is asking does he want to connect.

There are no Linksys router in the vicinity. I live in a small cluster of houses and have checked with the neighbours. I also checked with my wifi cards scan software. it only shows the known wifi networks in my neighbourhood.

I have never installed any sw for linksys.

:) Found it. It was the Intel PROset sw that was the culprit. Disabled notification alerts in the application settings menu and everything back to normal. But still don't no what it detected. Maybe its time to format and reinstall the hard drive.

    Thanks for the input

Thats great you found it working

But what interests me, is that how it would ask to download a router onto your computer in the first place.

    Glad you got it working

Do YOU have a linksys router?
I usually see this type of message when the stupid uPNP (universal plug and play) is trying to do stuff for you. A lot of routers have the uPNP ability now, and windows, in all its wisdom, thinks it knows what is best for you and tries to connect and set it up even when you don't want it to.
