I upgraded my DSL line speed. The phone company sent me a new modem. With the new modem I cannot connect to the internet via the router. Plug the old modem back in and it works fine. Plug the new modem directly to the laptop and it works fine. With both the new modem and the WRT54GS I cannot conect. I have had the router for about 5 years with no problems up to this point. Do I need a firmware upgrade or should I be looking at a newer router to handle the higher speed? I don't think it is the phone company since I can connect as long as the router is not in-line.

Here are some tips based on my experience setting up wireless routers:

    - Try upgrading the firmware but it sometimes helps and sometimes it doesn't.

    - Check the network connection settings to see if the computer is seeing the router properly.

    - Reset the router to factory settings.

    - Check the ethernet cables to see if one is damaged.

    - Some integrated router firewalls interfere with the DHCP leasing of various cable and DSL modems, see if turning off the hardware firewall helps. If this is the case make sure to set up a software firewall on your computers instead to keep it protected.

Sounds like the Router was set up w/ a Static Internet IP Address before, and maybe now w/ the new upgraded line they have given you a different dedicated Internet IP Address.

So what u need to do is log into the Router via a Web Browser (hope u remember how to do that) and set the Router's WAN Internet IP Address to be assigned Dynamically. Save the settings and try again.

Note: You do not need a new wireless Router.

Turning off the FW probably allowed the ISP to see the Notebooks MAC address. Try cloaning the MAC address of the NB into the New router. Or better yet look at the old router settings to confirm.

You really want the FW up. If not Do Not leave your PC on when not in use.

You can also avail to software firewalls like Comodo and Zonealarm. They both are free and are quite good.

I spent about two days checking as to why my router would not let me connect to the internet or would drop the connection, disconnecting the router's firewall down did the job. :p

Well I reported my issue to the phone company and they sent a technician. He didn't come in the house so he must have worked on the pole. Anyway I turned the firewall back on the router. So far it is working but a bit slow. I'm confused as to what is happening. I just wanted to say thanks for all the help.

If it's running or loading pages slow check and some sites fail to load you need to change the MTU in the router to 1492 (1500 def). If your running XP try using cablenut optimizer, the only one that worked for me.
