Ok so all of a sudden today I can no longer see my wireless router when I search for a network. So I power cycled the router, still nothing, hit the reset button and still nothing. I could however access it through my desktop which is on the wired portion of my network. Has anyone ever had this happen to them? Is it dead? I thought it might have overheated, we have the air conditioning on but my mother didn't want to be able to see the router so its behind the sofa, standing up on the front panel with the antennas sticking straight up, so its not well ventilated. and its now unplugged from both ethernet connection and power and sitting on my dining room table cooling off.

I've only had this for about 10 months now and it would really piss me off it already died, at least the warranty is still valid(hopefully).

when you hit the reset button, you must make sure to hold the button down for atleast 10 seconds before you let it go. tapping the button once doesn't do a thing.

well after 24 hours of sitting unplugged in front of the air conditioner, I plugged the router, or access point technically, in and guess what... it magically works.
Better than it being 'magically dead' but I have no clue what the hell the problem was. I might go to linksys and see if there is a firmware update or something, that has fixed issues with my wired router in the past.

Did you have SSID broadcast off? I think if its off you're wireless network is hidden, so you have to know the exact name of your wireless. It's a security thing.

Sounds like it was over heated, and needed to cool off.

Did you have to do the setup again or did it retain it after the resets? If it retained it, it was locked up big time, like Belkin's do.

no it didn't retain any settings after pressing the reset button, and that reminds me that I now have to change the SSID to something other than "linksys".

I just hope this overheating thing isn't a regular occurrence, because its already pretty cool in my house with the AC on and its fairly warmer in the fall and winter when the heat is on.

I'm wondering if it has anything to do with dust build-up since its on the floor, even though it doesn't have any internal fans. guess I just have to wait and see

Sorry, But the WRT54G is probably the worst router made these day. Once they moved away from the Linux Firmware and cut the ram in half, its been junk ever since. If you only have one PC doing light duty it's somewhat functional. The WRT54GL is the only one linksys makes that works decent. I no longer like or recommend them.

So they were forced to more ram due to USB Storage ......

Shhhhh.... Don't let Sisco Know, they may cut the ram in half and move away from Linux.
