    Hi,

I'm with BT as an ISP and use a BTHomehub Router, which I am not happy with at all.

A friend gave me a Linksys WRK54G router, AG421 modem and WRE54G range exapnder, all of which I am very keen to set up.

I've plugged the modem in and when I plug my computer into this, everything works perfectly.

However, that doesn't give me wireless or the configuration settings a router would give me.

When I plug in the WRK54G router, I cannot get an internet connection when I plug into it.

Going to the router management page, I get a basic setup page, with options for PPPoE, DCHP, etc. There's no option for PPPoA, which is what my BT HomeHub is currently set up to use and I have the username and password for that.

If the internet works coming from the modem, why doesn't it just work through the router? Can anyone provide suggestions as to what I can do to get it to work?

Googling, a lot of people seem to be unhappy with the router and need to reset it every few hours. This is OK, I just want to get it to work initially and then I work from there.

    Many, many thanks,

    Froskoy.

EDIT: So far, I haven't done anything with the Router CD. Will this help? Many thanks.
I have got the internet on it before, at someone else's house. It just seemed to work then.
This page was the most helpful I found, but even this didn't make it work: http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?pid=80&login=1&app=search&vw=1&articleid=3687&donelr=1

Did you turn off the modem for 10 seconds, and turn it back on (unplug from power source, then plug it back in)? DHCP server can be really picky and won't assign a new IP until you do that sometimes. I really mean the modem, not the router.

    ^^^ Good tip above.

And also, verify that the IP address on the Router is different than that of the Modems'.

I kicked myself in the butt the other day for not figuring this out soon enough. Turned out the Linksys Router had the same local IP as the Modem; For some reason as you stated too...it did intially connect and the Internet was up and running fine but after I change some setting and rebooted I couldn't get back on...leaving me to ponder what the heck was going on.

    So do you know the Modem's local IP address? If no, you can just connect the computer directly to the modem again; open up 'Command Prompt' and type the following command;

ipconfig /all and then hit the Enter key. The Gateway IP would be the IP address of the Modem. Now you can change the IP address of the Router by following Step 2 of that same link you posted. So if the Modem's IP is 192.168.1.1 you could change the Linksys Router to 192.168.2.1 just as the link suggests.

BTW, you shouldn't have to set the PPPoA or E user/pass in the Router again AFAIK, but I could be wrong. But i've never used BT (and i'm nowhere near Europe) so idk. Usually, for me, once the Modem has an uplink to the Internet I would just choose the 'Automatcally Config....' option under Router Setup in the Router.

And also, the issue I mentioned above with the IP settings is only a possibility. I'm not saying for sure this is the issue. But it's something to check out.

I would try doing a factory reset of all the settings on both the modem and the router.

Try it with default settings, and go from there.
