I have a Linksys WPC54G (v1), which is more than two years old, on my Sony VAIO, which is more than three years old. The computer does generate a lot of heat, and I notice the PC occasionally locks up when using the wireless adapter. To "unlock" the PC, I remove and reinsert the wireless adapter and itworks OK for a while, then locks up again.

I restored the computer, removed and reloaded the software/driver for the card, and still no fix.

Anybody else have problems with these? :confused2:

Wireless adapters use a lot of power to transmit and receive data. Clean out the slot around where you plug in the adapter, and try to make sure you have air moving around it. That should help a bit. The only other solution is to get a different wireless adapter. Consider a USB one, which will stick further out from your PC and get better airflow around it to stay cool.

Is it locking up at a set time. Like every 10 min ..... or is something else causing the problem, AV, FW or some prg trying to update.

They do get how but it should not be a problem. I use a pcmci card 10+ hr a day with no issues. Mine set on top of the HD so it is nice and toasty.

I finally got some time to play with and attempt to troubleshoot this thing, and decided to use the other (upper) card slot instead of the lower one. The computer has been running for many hours and the problem has not yet occurred in this configuration. This leads me to believe that either the first (lower) slot is failing, or it is too close to the source of the heat... causing the card to stop working (hard to get an accurate temperature reading at that point).

I will keep on top of this, and report back if a conclusion can be reached.
