Linksys 310N and Intel 4965AGN, no wifi-n.
So I've read up and down on the linksys forums and notebookreview.com for a solution, and can't get anything to work.
I have a mixture of B and G devices on my network, and my main laptop has the Intel 4954AGN internal wireless card in it.
I now am basically to the point where I will never purchase a linksys unit again after these problems. They say their unit will run the 802.11n mixed with other network protocols, but the few times i got the N to work, i couldn't get anything else to connect. And if i got the B and G to work, it's because I disabled the N.
Does anyone have settings that work with the 310N and Intel4965AGN combination.. Where other wireless units can connect as well..
I have the latest linksys firmware installed on the 310N,
I also have the latest Intel drivers.
Running Windows Vista Business 32bit. 3gb Ram. Core2-Duo @ 2.5ghz

When you said "And if i got the B and G to work, it's because I disabled the N", did the 4965 connect at his point?
If the 310n is in "N" only mode, non "N" products will not work as this router is not simultaneous dual band capable. The 4965 will "slave" to the lowest capability wifi device in mixed mode, but it should work, just not at highest rated speed. What are your router and 4965 settings?
I just got rid of a 310n simply because I wanted simultaneous dual band routing capability, but for what it was at the time, I loved it. It had noticeably better range than my current DIR-855.
Another thing is it was easier to configure manually than using the set-up disc, but this may have changed as it was well over a yaer since I installed the one I had. Firmware upgrade may help as well, but I have a feeling it just needs to be configured correctly. -
I also use 4965 with WRT310N. It can connect up to 130Mbps. I also have G devices (and used to have B device), all can connect together.
What type of security do you use? AFAIK, you have to use WPA (or WPA2) to get the N. In my setup, I use WPA2-AES. -
when you do buy a new wireless router, make sure it says something like 'diversity' on the box. This will likely mean that the router is capable of simultaneous a/b/g/n connections.
Remember too that the 'n' Wifi standard is still in draft. Yes, multiple makers are selling lots of product. But anything can still happen to the 'n' standard before it goes final later this year. Ity's not surprising that people occasionally run into incompatibilities when mucking around with wireless networking. -
AFAIK 'diversity' is used for defining the usage of multiple antennas in radio signal transmissions. WRT310N already uses diversity as it has 3 antennas.
And I think all of (draft) N wireless routers/APs must use this antenna diversity technique, at least with 2 antennas, in order to get higher connection speed than G standard as with the term of Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO). -
aidil: what are your settings on the router (advanced too if they have to be changed), and what are the settings on your wifi nic ?
do you have xp or vista ??
i'm running wpa2-personal for security.
------------------------------------------------
as far as the other post. in mixed mode (bgn), my laptop had intermittent connectivity at speeds up to 130, but mainly stayed around 40 - 60. in bg-mixed mode, the laptop is at a constant 54.
------------------------------------------------ -
The settings in my WRT310N (Firmware Version v1.0.07-LS-HND):
Network Mode: Mixed
Radio Band: Wide - 40MHz Channel
Wide Channel: currently 4 (depends on the free channels your neighborhood)
Standard Channel: currently 2 - 2.417GHz (depends on the free channels your neighborhood)
sec: wpa2-personal
encry: aes
key renew: 3600
AP Isolation: disabled
Frame Burst: enabled
Authentication Type: auto
Basic Rate: default
Transmission Rate: auto
N Transmission Rate: auto
CTS Protection Mode: auto
Beacon Interval: 100
DTIM Interval: 1
Fragmentation Threshold: 2346
RTS Threshold: 2347
I don't do any settings in my 4965 advance properties, while in the 5100 and 5300 I enabled the 40MHz (change 20MHz to Auto) for 2.4GHz band. -
So far, not fun.
My ps3 is getting disconnected a bunch, and so is my blackberry.
Encryption: WPA2 Personal
Channel: 8
Signal Strength:-53 dbm
Band: 802.11b/g
Signal Level: 61%
Signal used to be above 90% all the time in the same spot I'm in now..
I'm doing a site survey now to make sure I'm not crossing channels with anyone else. -
after i made the settings, i took my laptop and put it 2 feet from the router. i've attached screen shots of the network card status page, and a 3-5 minute scan of the wifi networks in the area.
then i move my laptop downstairs and did the scan again. i was directly underneigth the router, and look at the results.
both times i had no connection to the router, besides the first minute of scanning when i took the windows network status.
all other scanning was done without being connected to a wireless network.
i'm wired right now to send this message...Attached Files:

got it working, kind of..
it's the other solution that intel mentioned in their trouble shooting steps.
I opened up the security settings so there is no encryption.
then i put MAC filtering on the wireless and everything is working ok.
130mbps on my laptop.
gaming systems all at 54.
blackberry at 54 as well.
so i guess i'm somewhat happy..
thanks for the help and ideas people. -
Update:
Was working great for a day, now I'm back to intermittent problems with the router. Maybe a I got a messed up one?? -
intermittent problems ..... gonna need a bit more info
-
pretty much intermittent connection problems. computer would say it was connected, but then disconnect, and reconnect every couple seconds/minutes..
i reset the router and defaulted it to 54 again. it's working and i'm off to vacation.. -
Enjoy the vacation; where ya goin', sea and sand, mountains, snow, or...?
-
Punta Cana, Dominician Republic. Much better than Ohio weather. Sun and Fun along with all you can eat and drink...
for the wifi, i think i'm just gonna push the ddwrt firmware on my routers and deal with the 54g speeds.. no use in fiddle-f'in with the wifi-n until i really need it.
