Im not that good with wireless networking so i need your help. I have a Linksys WRT54G v4 router with Firmware Version: v4.71.1, Hyperwrt 2.1b1 + Thibor15c.

I wanna limit my familys download speeds to about 30kbps so they can stop hogging the bandwidth i pay for.

I tried messing around with the QoS of the router and modem but the settings only allow me to prioritize them. Anyone know of a firmware that lets me specifically limit download/upload speeds?

    Cheers

QoS will work, all setup a little different. Generally you have to create a FW rule (inbound) for either user/group and assign the QoS Priority that you want. Make sure the rule is where it will execute before the allow all does. On QoS you have several priority you can set and type of control. I would add a rule for your PC give it priority over the others and how much bandwidth you want. I do know the dd-wrt firmware supports this, do not know about Hyperwrt.

Hmmm... use Download managers like Orbit downloader or Download accelerator... they pull speed for u.

But if u wanna Limit their Speeds then i am afraid u can't do it so easily..

    You can block their Ports.

go to www.port-forwarding.com and they ll teach u how to manage ports or Block them.

thanks for the responses, ill be looking into it

Ive had this router for a very very long time

Ive set everyone else to low priority except for mine, but it still doesnt stop them from downloading at 300kbps+ . I can only set the upload bandwidth which works. There doesnt seem to a option for download speed so im gonna have to look into the DD firmware

I just wanna limit the FTP/torrent downloads to about 30kbps for everyone else except for me. I dont wanna block them as ill probably cause mayhem in the house

In DD-WRT, you can set the maximum bandwidth alloted to one user in Kbps (which they recommend as 80-100%, but you could use it to at 20% or so).

The QoS will work, and you already have it. Just need to research on how yours is setup. May connect with the firmware's forum/home page. May have a user guide to walk you through it.

Id prefer not changing firmware because my current firmware hasnt dropped out for years. Unfortunately i cant even remember where i got the firnware from.

Heres a screenshot of the QoS page. Notice how theres no "Download speed" option

okay i just went to the dd-wrt website and tried to download a firmware, so confusing. I didnt really wanna go through too much trouble with this

So is this the correct one for my WRT54G v3.1 router?

    http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv3/dd-wrt/downloads.html

    dd-wrt.v23_sp2_standard.zip ?

    thanks, rep to u guys

Flash the mini version first, then the full version from within the admin GUI.

With DD-WRT, there'll be a downstream speed drag-down menu in addition to an upstream drag-down menu.

Some of the newer ones require it. Since yours is a v4 you should be fine wiht the full.

    Your current firmware supports QoS.

You do not not want to use the Application for priority, that impacts all users. Under Catagory there should be a better options like bandwidth control. I would not restrict all users. I would make it give you a min, and let the other split whats left. Most allow you to set a range when it comes to bandwidth control. Set the max to you ISP max, then put the min to what you want when all users are on. Assign this to MAC Address. If you select a port, all they need to do is change port connection on the back of the router. Then you may want to add a second rule to proritize the connection to put yours on top, highest.

Okay got it all perfectly worked out. My current firmware cant alter the download speed so i decided to change firmware ..

After messing around with the DD-WRT, i got it all set-up. I made the WAN d/l limit to 500kbps(not KBps) while putting my mac address on Exemption. Just tested it using speedtest.net =D

    Awesome support here.. thanks!

btw whats the ideal kbps(kilo bits not bytes) for youtube clips to load smoothly? 500kbps is about 40-60KBps download speed.

Glad to see you have it working. QoS can give you alot of options. This is what gaming Routers do. Give the priority to minimize lag.

    8 bits = 1 byte

Make sure you have the router PW protected so they can not change/disable your settings. You can actually set it up for you to have priority over the other users too.

If you have a 2mbps download speed from your ISP, with 4 users. 500kbps is 1/4 of your bandwidth.

Just remember it process these just like FW rules in the order they are set.
