Hi I posted in the Acer forum because my new laptop is an Acer 8200, but I need help soon on my LAN issue. I can't seem to get the laptop to connect. My other laptop would just plug right in and connect via my desktop then to the cable router. This one keeps making up random IP addresses and says "acquiring network address" for about 5 minutes then fails.
I tried setting the IP as 192.168.0.2 and other things but I dont really know what I'm doing. I don't have any available wireless connections, which is what most people complain about. This one is an ethernet connecting my acer to my desktop, then the desktop to the modem.

    Thanks

you're connecting through your desktop to the modem? do you not have a router?

can you post your LAN topology please? it will help isolate the fault.

I dont know what topology is but here goes nothing:
I get internet to the laptop like this-
    Wall
    Cable goes to modem
Cable goes from modem to desktop
Ethernet cable goes from desktop to laptop

I also tried directly connecting the laptop to the modem and had the same problem.

maybe your modem has buit in MAC filtering. have you ever plugged another computer into the modem and had it work (besides the desktop)?

your life would be made much easier if you went out and purchased a router.

LOL you can't blame acer for this.

Ok, i know what your doing, i did this before i got a router, in fact i connect 2 additional computer to my desktop! LOL!.

I highly, extremely highly suggest you get a router, it make this alot easier.

Since you will still be experiencing drop connections after you get the router. you need to do the following.

On your desktop there's my network place, open that and then right click on your network card, go to properties, then click CONFIGURE, then click on advance, in the menu you will see linkspeed, click on that then click on 100/10 halfmode. Then click ok and your ready, you may just wanna restart your computer and your good to go. You will no longer get dropped connections.

As for running your wired connection, it is extremely old shcool, lol, and yes it does work properly :D.

Once you get your Router, i suggest a wireless one with 4 ethernet ports on the back.

your connection will look like this.

    Wall
    wire goes to modem
wire goes from modem to router WAN port
All wires computer use Ethernet wires and connect to Router on the LAN ports.

If your gonna run the laptop wirelessly, then press the wireless on button on the laptop and it should find the connection and then connect to it and your good.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks,

Wow thanks a lot for the help. I am going to pick up a router this evening!! Do they have routers that are both wired and wireless? ie for my desktop and notebook? I 'm not blaming Acer for anything, I just called them and they solved my problem in under 10 minutes. The guy was real clear on what to do.

I had to go into cmd and type ipconfig /release, then ipconfig /renew and it worked like magic!
