    Hey,
I recently setup my parents new computer and am having trouble with the LAN setup with a Netgear Rangemax router. When I try to run the connection setup disk that came with the router, it says that it is unable to get an IP address. I tried the setting that says "automatically get IP" and I also tried to put in my router IP...192.168.1.1. Nothing worked, still said "limited or no connectivity". Anyone know what could be wrong and how to fix it?
    Thanks

Is the "Rangemax" a wireless router?

Either way, you sound knowledgable but have you tried resetting things?

Generally, this message indicated that there is a signal between the computer and the router but that the router is not sending a proper network signal. The router could be defective or need configuring (probably not) or a possible driver update. It could also mean that the router is not getting a good signal in the first place.

You may want to test your signal by plugging straight into the modem and also calling your provider. If there is a signal problem they may can walk you through some steps to correct it.

The Rangemax is a LAN/WAN router.

I am actually running 2 wireless computers and 2 LAN computers including my parents new computer. All three of the other computers are recieving a connection including the LAN computer. So it can't be my provider and I am trying to find out if the problem is with the router settings or the computer.

Hmm. I can tell you that I had a computer that at one time would get the same message at someone's house when there were three others, including one other laptop, that were working (similar situation only not wireless) and eventually the router gave out. When they got a new one my computer worked just fine with it.

It was an older router but either way it was the router not working properly. Usually my experience has found that this is not a problem with the computer itself but with the signal coming in somehow.

If you get it figured out let us know what happened.

Set it to obtain ip and DNS automatically.
    Open up a MS-DOS promt (start>run>cmd)
    type in "ipconfig/release" hit enter
    then "ipconfig/renew" hit enter
and see if the same thing still happens.

Also, try swapping out the cable between the computer and the router w/ another one. The cable may be defective, or be the wrong type such as a crossover or rollover. You need a patch cable or straight through cable.

I will try that tonight and see if it works...thanks for responding

I know the cable is right because it works with other computers.
Thanks a lot for the suggestions, will try and post results in a couple hours.

This may sound simple/silly, but have you tried powering everything down and back up again? It might be that it just needs a restart to recognize a new computer is hooked up?

I had a similar sounding problem just the other week, where the 2nd computer I added to the LAN router would have limited connectivity. I think that ultimately turning the router off then on again did the trick. I have a feeling some changed settings just didn't go into effect until the router was restarted.

I tried ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew and it didn't work. As simple as resetting the router sounds, I haven't tried it yet. I am running a program called control 4 on my home network so I was afraid that some setting might reset if i reset the router. I think that resetting the router is basically my last choice to get it to work so I will have to try. I'll post what happens...

Erm, I didn't mean a hard reset, just a quick "unplug/replug" of the AC adapter to see if that kicks in the keister. That shouldn't reset any saved settings, I think. But it'll give it enough to (maybe) recognize a new connection upon powering up again.... at least, that's the silly theory I'm banking on.

    Here's how you fix it
    1) Double click on your LAN icon at the system tray (where the clock and date is at the buttom right of your screen)
    2) Click on the "Support tab"
    3) Write down
    3.1) IP address - Example 192.168.1.2
    3.2) Subnet Mask - Example 255.255.255.0
    3.3) Default Gateway - Example 192.168.0.1
    4) Click on the "General tab"
    5) Click Property - A new window will pop up. In the middle square, highlight
    "Internet protocol (TCP/IP)
    6) Click on property (should be below it on the right)
    7) Select "Use the following IP address" and fill in the information you wrote down.
    8) Click "OK"
    9) Wait a couple of seconds
    10) A message will pop up at ur LAN icon says it's working properly.
    11) Have a wonderful day.

When I try to change the option from "obtain an IP address automatically" to "use the following ip address", it wont let me keep "obtain dns server address automatically" checked. It makes me choose "use the following dns server address". What should i do now?

Start--> Run---> type cmd then key ipconfig/all it should display dns servers, key these numbers in the area you are in question of.

"If you find that you can not pull up webpages, the problem is most likely the dns numbers you entered. Give your ISP a call, and they will be able to tell you which dns servers to use. This is a question they answer all of the time. They will be able to tell you what you should use right away."

The above is a quote from PortFoward.com on their "How to set up a static IP address page"

I found this website very usefull when I was in a similar situation as the one you describe.
