So what exactly the bandwidth that your brother is using? 8mb/s is very good for 2 comps. Ours sometimes drops down to 6 with 3 comps and digital TV through it.

    cheers ...

smack your little bro with a tennis racket? Or, if he is downloading warez or pr0n, ask the parents to 'have a look'.

Technology will never, ever fix a human management problem.

Ok i'll leave my input. Typical home Routers don't usually have advanced features such as bandwidth limiting out-the-box. You would be lucky if you do have one that has these features. So therefore you would most liekly need a third-party firmware to flash the Router with to unlock* such features, which you clearly stated in your OP that you don't really want to go that route.

Nevertheless, without any experience with your Router I have no clue whether or not it has those features out of the box but even with my third-party firmware (DD-WRT) on my Linksys wrt54g2 I can't limit broadband to the IP per se, but I can lower the priority of bandwidth allocated to a said IP Address. And also limit bandwidth or block packets being sent all together to various programs and applications etc.

if he is using torrent clients which i think this is the only programs that can use very high speed for very long time , u ll find a built in function inside this programs to limit speed of download , you can pm the program and ill send the way to limit the speed

so can you please go www.speedtest.net and do a speed test , you will get your exact download and upload speed lets say u got 800kb/sec download and 200kb/sec upload , go to utorrent then press options --> prefences on the left you will find bandwidth , then on the right you can choose maximum download speed and upload be sure to limit upload and download , lets say u ll give him half the speed which will be 400kb download and 100kb upload ,you will only change values for maximum upload rate and global download rate , don't mess with anything else, hope i helped ya

So why wasn't this said before...I thought we were just talking about limiting/prioritizing bandwidth in general. Anyway, as I use uTorrent myself beige is right with what he's saying about limiting the bandwidth for that app.

no people here care, but just very little number of routers that can support bandwidth limiting

I thought this was a basic feature of routers...
    You got it right
But if its not possible, at least limit utorrent
