I am very new to notebooks, purchasing my first one just 2 days ago. I was just wanting to know, is it possible to leave the WLAN on while the notebook is in standby mode? I would like to leave in on to receive messages on MSN when i am not at the notebook. I m using a HP DV2104eu with broadcom 802.11b/g card and XP MCE.

    Thanks

    JT

Standby halts the OS and everything in it. The best you can do is a power scheme that turns off the hard discs and LCD after a certain amount of time while keeping the processor at the lowest frequency possible.

I believe some notebooks have Wake-On-WLAN tech that allows the computer to turn on after receiving the magic packet. This is mostly for business users who are away from their computers and need to turn them on remotely. If IM could do that (which it cannot) you'd still wake up back to the OS and come out of standby.
