I currently have a Sanyo Katana, and I get unlimited web access on the phone itself. I've been able to connect via bluetooth between the phone and my built in card on the laptop. I see the possibility to use the phone as a dial up modem, since there's an icon to set that up. But what I want to try is to get the connection "through" the phone, not using it as a modem. Does that make sense? I think I read something about setting up an access point but I don't really understand. Can someone tell me if this is possible? I get unlimited web surfing right now, and am not too sure if it's the same as a "data package."

Your post is a little confusing but as far as I am getting it, you want to use your phone for the internet using GPRS or any other data service on your phone right?

If thats the question, yes you can do it, heck it even work with infra red.

Umm...I'm connecting via the phone's wireless web. It's supposed to be the slower technology. I just know it's part of the vision pack. I'm not too sure what GPRS is...

I also have wireless internet on my phone but for me to get internet on my computer I had to get unlimited data pack from alltel for $25/month added to my phone bill. This allows you to hook phone to usb port and use the net. Not sure if that's what you wanted to know but that's what I had to do. They told me there is no connection or relation to the wireless access I get on the phone itself and being able to use the phone as a modem.

Ok, the data plan that comes with the phone is usually GPRS, HSPDA or some thing like that and yes you can do that with bluetooth.

Are you saying you do have to buy the data plan ($25) to get internet access on your laptop using your phone as a modem via usb or bluetooth? Or are you saying the $6 I pay to get wireless internet on my phone can somehow be beamed and accessed on a computer? Or am I just not following what's going on at all? Poster...Are you trying to hook to the net on your computer by using the internet access on your phone without buying a data plan. This would mean you are getting EV signal correct.

I am trying to access internet directly through the phone using the bluetooth connection. I have what I believe is a data package, which allows for unlimited web surfing on the phone. I know it will be slow, but in a crunch, it's be nice to have some sort of connection to get on the internet. I know I can always buy a card and put it in my laptop, but I'm not looking for such a dedicated connection.

    RovingCalypso-
How do I connect then? For bluetooth services for my phone, I only see three of them: dial up modem being one of them, another listed as speakerphone, and I forgot the third. There's nothing listed as an access point. I'm able to pair up with the phone, and have been able to use the built in mic and speakers on the laptop to talk on the cell phone via the bluetooth.

I don't think it is possible to use or redirect your internet on your phone to use it as access on a computer? if you could do this then why would carriers make you pay the $25 fee. I know you can use the bluetooth from the phone to the computer to access the internet with the same result that I get everyday using the usb connection but you have to sign up for the Data plan for alltel it's $25/month on your phone bill for verizon it is $60/month to get it.
Plus you have to be able to get the EV signal on your phone which is for data transfer and don't forget about the disc with the drivers and log in screen.
If you can just beam your phone internet signal and use it to connect to the net on a computer let me know how so I can save my $25/month.

I am not sure but I think when we say data plan we are talking about 2 different things.
Internet on my phone is $6/month. Thenthe data package to use the phone as
a modem is an additional $25. You do not need the $6 phone net to get the data plan
    access. Clear as mud???

I use a Nokia 3230 via bluetooth and it's always been configured as a dial-up bluetooth modem on the PC and it dials in using *99#. I use T-Mobile.

So you use your phone to get on the internet with the dial up connection? Instead of dialing a "normal" number, you just dial "*99#"? Do you have to pay anything on top of the standard phone plan?

Yes, it dials up through the phone using bluetooth just like a dial-up modem. It dials *99#, no login or pw necessary. Data is unlimited and they use GPRS/EDGE. They have 2 plans available, $5/mo with limited open ports and $20/mo with all ports open. I use the $5/mo plan, works great.

How did you know to dial *99#? Did Tmobile tell you that?
