LAN not working anymore

Hello everyone,

I'm having a technical problem with the LAN port in my computer.

Just in the morning the LAN port was working fine with a current ISP on fiber optic, then I actually had upgraded the speed by switching to a different provider in the same day, just after 2 hours the tech guy came in and setup everything just fine and tested multiple devices and they all work just fine.

When I tried to connect and use the LAN port in my Desktop PC it said it is missing internet protocols and the Ethernet cable is not connected (But it IS connected), I checked the CAT 6 cable that I connected from the router to my PC by connecting it to my laptop, the laptop got the internet just fine, so the cable is good.

My desktop also got a wireless card, it also disconnects by it self sometimes so I'm not sure what the Issue is here.
I'm using windows 10 that I upgraded to from Win 8.1 64-bit.
Rig specs are:
MOBO: Asus ROG Maximus Formula VII
CPU: i7 4790K @4.4Ghz with H100i cooler
RAM: 32GB DDR3
SSD: 480GB (OS)
PSU: RM1000 Corsair

I'm only thinking of formatting the drive and doing a fresh install of windows but this is too steep to do now, so much hard work is going to be erased as I game on this machine.

Please help me with any Ideas to solve this LAN issue, if you have encountered this before then kindly let me know what you did to solve it, I tried some solutions from youtube but it only fixes the wireless card temporary so I need the LAN mostly to use the Fiberoptic maximum speed of 150mbps.

Could LAN get fried by any chance from the router?

 

Quite often Windows 10 will say it's missing network protocols when there is nothing wrong. We see it all the time on my roommates sons computer when I have his MAC address blocked on the Comcast router because he only gets 2 hours of computer time a day and has to ask me for it when he wants it. As soon as I turn on his access and reboot the protocol issue goes away. Try resetting the router to defaults and setting it back up and see if that fixes it, especially if it's an ISP router.

There's no way a router should be able to kill a LAN port. Try connecting the other end of the cable to your laptop and go to explore network and see if the computers see each other, that will get you an answer. Whenever I need to backup one machine to another so I can nuke the install I always run ethernet to ethernet because it's quite frankly much faster than running it through the router. Old throw back to the days of using serial cables to avoid having to fight with Novell and such.

 

Thank you for your suggestion, I need to call the ISP for details on what to do when I need to reset the route, my current set up is Fiberoptic cable>>>Modem>>Ethernet cable from Modem into Route>>Router LAN port with CAT6 to my PC upstairs (17m length of cable).
I'll try to plug both ends, one in PC and other side in laptop.

Ouch. Well they sell cheap USB Ethernet dongles at least, you could get one of those.

Is there something wrong with the cable maybe or the router LAN port? I hope the motherboard LAN port isn't dead, that would be really inconvenient!

 

I would try a Linux live distro first to make sure it isn't just a software issue before calling it.

 

Well I went out and bought this USB to Ethernet dongle, it works with 10mbps only and it keeps saying unidentified network, when I try to diagnose, a BSOD hits me with a WDF_VIOLATION Error, creates a dump then rebooths windows, the wireless works fine but god it is slow for me.....once you use ethernet you learn to HATE wireless!!

Tomorrow I will return the dongle and buy an internal PCIe card to test it.

The MOBO LAN port is dead for sure, I tried it.

Well here is an update:
I installed PCIe LAN card, the card works but I get the "Unidentified network" issue, so I had it, I formatted windows 10 completely to a new install, I'm still faced with the same problem now, turns out the onboard LAN is not fried....good thing but I still have the same problem on both LAN ports now, unidentified network issues and when I diagnose anyone of them it tells me that it is missing an internet protocol.

I tried that CMD command for reinstalling the IPV4 winsocks but still no change, I disabled the power saver for the LAN ports, disabled netbios and still I have the same issue....any solutions?

 

On the off-chance it really is a protocol issue; see what's installed and do try Linux as well, like Ethrem suggested. Second, check bios settings for LAN-related options, IPv6 may be disabled from there. Lastly, check the router's logs (192.168.0.1 or similar; use 'ipconfig /all' -> Default gateway) and see if there's a more helpful error entry.

Last ditch is that it could be a ground loop issue; the laptop may very well use a double-shielded adapter (or run on battery), whereas the desktop can have a connected ground. Check if the CAT6 cable is shielded and also see if the router and modem are properly (un)grounded, depending on their specifications. Best is to have only one end of the device (switch/router) ground and have everything else drain to that point, so make certain the router is properly installed; ports, cables and socket alike. In your scenario nothing else should be grounded; the modem and connected cat cables should drain only to the router.
