Is the hub connected to a DHCP server?

OK, other than your laptop is the hub connected to anything else, like a DSL or cable modem?

Now that's helpful information. What is the IP address you are receiving on your laptop?

OK. You can only have one computer connected to your friend's cable modem at any one time. What you need is a router to connect to the modem, then connect the computers to the router. The router will be the one connection allowed to the cable modem, then the router will share the connection to the computers.

So, your friend doesn't have his own cable modem?

What were you able to take to your house and get a connection from?

Your friend is getting a good IP address. You're getting an APIPA address, which won't get you anywhere fast. The modem will only allow one connection. And it also sounds like the modem has locked on your friend's computer's MAC address.

Glad to help. Be sure to clone your friend's desktop's MAC address to the router while setting it up.
