I "upgraded" from a Intel 5300 to a Killer 1103 card expecting faster downloads and streams as well as responsiveness and have been dissapointed.

The Intel 5300 performs just as well and in fact it connects at boot up much faster than the killer. Often the Killer won't even connect and I have to connect it manually. Also reception on the Killer card is worse than on the 5300!

I am running it on wireless G so perhaps this is the reason. I hope to go to wireless N next month.

Any advice to bring it up to speed? Using the standard killer driver and manager downloaded from the killer website.

Check if there are more recent drivers form Atheros (who is an actual manufacturer of the chip).

It's a good card but overall networking experience is a result of building and configuring a proper network and of what your ISP has to offer. So yes- new (and properly configured) router may make a difference but to be honest it would have made the difference with 5300 too.

Yeah you are right. It wasn't a total waste as the 5300 went into the wife's laptop that had really bad wireless. I just hope the killer will perform just as well soon.

I am having massive issues with the latest drivers on the 1103. Skype is unusable with drops after 1 minute. I also have increasing connectivity issues. I travel a lot and face hotel wifi. My work computer (Dell latitude) with whatever standard card it has, consistently has better reception and better speed. I also have problems with Network detection from the 1103. At home I maintain 4 laptops, 1 Xbox, 3 Phones + 1 tablet. All can connect and share via the network drives and all windows devices can connect via home group EXCEPT the Laptop with the Killer 1103 card.

It is frustrating to opt into a premium option but only to realize there is no support behind it. I am much considering ripping out the Killer 1103 card and shoving an Intel card in!

    Any thoughts anyone?

My suggestion- use Atheros stock drivers- not anything with a Killer badge one it- no added apps and so on.

Atheros is the maker of the chip and they create the drivers- they do have a checkered history though. Sometimes one driver has a significant bug, next one doesn't and the following one does have a similar bug again. With that being the case start with the most recent driver and if that doesn't help use previous versions.

Where can we find these Atheros drivers for the 1103?

I have contacted support and they send me the below link for the latest Atheros drivers. They seem to be better so far, but I am only 24hrs in, so I will update again once I have a better sense of their performance.

Give it a try if you like:
    http://www.killergaming.com/support-downloads/Ak27x64.sys

    Instruction:
    Download this file: http://www.killergaming.com/support-downloads/Ak27x64.sys
Then, go into C:\Windows\system32\drivers and rename Ak27x64.sys to Ak27x64.old
Then, move the new file you downloaded into the same directory, and reboot.

I have no idea what changed. It also did not solve my issues. Skype continues to drop and has ridiculous static.

Reporting back: I've had the driver now for a few days. It is a bit better on some ends, but overall still inferior to any of my other laptop's Intel cards.
Connectivity issues around homegroups/filesharing/proxy and also with the Xbox are terrible.

In short: I'm going to through out my killer card - it ruins my otherwise wonderful machine...
Has anyone changed their cards before? Which one should I change to? I think Intel is definitely my choice as I had no problems with them.
What should a wifi card cost? :)

    Cheers guys.

If you're talking about the Clevo in your sig, an Intel 6300 usually costs somewhere between 20$-30$ in North America. Make sure to get a version that isn't meant for HP or Lenovo, uninstall your wireless drivers, swap the adapters, install the Intel drivers, profit!

I haven't tried the Killer cards, but with the 6300, WLAN to WLAN >10MB/s file transfers (with an adequate router/5GHz), yes please! :D

Take a look at the router buyer's guide sticky. I'm using a Linksys E4200v1 myself and it's has been giving me top notch performance so far. The router is only half the equation though. As a rule, i avoid anything made by D-Link or MediaLink.

I have a preference for cisco stuff due to good experiences with every cicso router i've bought, but i wouldn't mind buying Netgear, Asus or TP-Link either. TP-Link delivers great performance for the price.

I first thought it was my router, but since all my other computers, laptops, tablets, mobile and xbox do not have any issues, the killer came into view.

BTW, new drivers released today / anyone tried them yet?

I am currently on travel and have not had a chance yet to buy a new/different card.

As a follow up, I am using the latest and new Atheros drivers. They are a bit better, but not yet there. Pings are not consistent and jitter is high. I do not have the issue with other devices, only the one with the Killer Hardware. Anyone else any news?
