Is there an option in Windows XP to keep the Internet and LAN active while in stand-by mode?

    Thank you.

Stand-By by nature is supposed to turn off devices to save power. If you need to keep the devices on, then don't use stand by.

Well, go ahead and use standby. It bring things up quicker. But there is no way to keep any network connections live while in standby. It's the nature of the beast.

i had recently had the same question. it bugs me cause i have windows mce, and when i press the power button on the remote it puts the comp in standby, which means i get logged off IM. which means if i'm watching some tv on the comp before i go to sleep but want to keep an away message up overnight, i can't. In case people were wondering why anyone would want to keep network alive in standby, that's why...

Then you don't want to keep the network alive, you want to keep the system running. You're not just keeping the network connection active, you're wanting to still run the programs that are using the network connection (keeping your away message up). You can't have your cake and eat it too. You have to either let the computer "sleep", and deal with the fact that it doesn't run ANYTHING while asleep, or leave it running and let it do what you want it to do, but deal with the noise/power/light/whatever.

Another question somewhat regarding this. I've noticed on computers in the past where in the power settings you have it shut the hard drives down, but nothing else (no standby, no hibernate, etc)...and it loses the network connection. I'd like to be able to shut the HDD down but have my IM and stuff stay up and running (and spin up only if a msg came in). Is that possible?

think carefully about your question. if your HD is shut down, does it stand to reason that the computer is still functioning?

In theory, that'd be quite possible. If everything Windows needs is in RAM, it might not need to access the HD. In practice though, it automatically spins the HD up again if there's any user activity on the computer.

But what you ask should be possible. In Windows power settings, you can define when (if ever) it should go into standby mode, and when (if ever) it should turn off the HD. Just set it to not go into standby, but turn off the HD after x minutes. In my experience, that works fine without losing internet connection

my problem was more with the fact the only thing the 'power' button in mce does (unless i'm mistaken) is put the computer into standby. i'd rather have it just exit media center!
