I've got a very obnoxious problem with with my network connections. Every 30 minutes or so, my laptop gets disconnected from the internet. It's not that I'm losing connection to the network, just the internet. I have two roommates all using their laptops flawlessly, so chances are it's something wrong with my specific machine. I have this issue on my factory 802.11n card, an 802.11g USB dongle I bought to troubleshoot, and with a wired ethernet connection going straight into the router. My drivers are up to date for the wireless cards and the ethernet controller, so that isn't an issue. I had this problem both on Vista x86 and 7 x86 (this was still a problem even after I put a fresh install of 7 on the machine). I've tried just about everything, including calling Dell and my ISP, who were both just confused. Anyone have an idea what's going on here? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Your roommates are messing with you.

Or you could first try and reset your modem/router.

That was the first thing I tried.

try using static settings instead of dynamic ones in your wireless configuration

or a mandatory 30 min dhcp expiration. some routers do not do dhcp correctly and actually kill a connection instead of letting it ride until the user terminates it.

How would I fix this mandatory fix? I haven't seen any options like that in my router menus and neither of my roommates get kicked, only me.

First of all, make sure that your DHCP "lease time" is more than 30 minutes (if that is causing the issue)

Also, WiFi channel interference can cause this as well, change the channel and see how it goes.

I've tried changing the channel with no effect. Given that my roommates aren't getting kicked, this DHCP lease time could still be an issue? Is it connection specific?

I'm still having the problem, how do I change the DHCP lease time? I don't see any options within my gateway's menus. Are these leases specific to each separate connection on the network, or is it the same for the whole network. Like I said, I'm the only one on this network having the problem.

Problem fixed - my lease time was somehow set to 10 minutes, I changed the connection to static to avoid DHCP and now it's working perfectly. Thanks for the help.
