Ok first of all I like to adress its not the SIGNAL or Mbps rate that dropps to 1.0Mbps. The signal constantly stays at 'very good' and 36~ 54 mbps.

I am surfing the internet fine.. then BAM! internet stopps working.. by 'BAM' it dont mean any sound or reckless breaking noise..

It makes me reboot everytime whenever it does this.. This happens around 5 or more a day which is very frustating.

I am currently using Sony vaio s460b. This incident didnt happen 2 weeks ago.

Maybe its something wrong with Liksys wireless router..
If anyone has any similar problem like me please do post.

I know people have had problems with the 2200bg. I have been lucky I haben't had any problems with mine. You might want to try the driver on Intel's website. Sometimes it works better. Also look to see if there is a firmware upgrades for you router. Make sure your router is not placed by your computer, cordless phone or behind anything. Good Luck.

Did you try repairing the connection
Try being wired to the modem and see if it disconnects, which could be a problem with the modem.
If the persists, get a new router. What router do you have currently?

I hate my Intel 2200BG card so much that I'm getting an Atheros. I've had the same maddening problems with slow, dropped and no connections at all despite getting Excellent - Very Good connection to on my brand new router. I have a Linksys A+G WRT55AG router.

    Sky,

Make sure you're running the lastest drivers from the Intel website (v9.0.2.31). I used to have the same problem as well, but after upgrading the drivers, I have not seen a drop in speed at all.

Below is the link to Intel's drivers for the 2200BG.
    http://support.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/sb/cs-010623.htm

After installing, goto Device Manager and make sure that you have v9.0.2.31 drivers for your wireless network card. It may still be using the older versions. I had to manually install the drivers myself.

    1. Extract the files out using WinRAR (or whatever other program)
    2. Goto Device Manager -> Network Adapters -> Right click you Wireless card -> Properties -> Driver Tab -> Update Driver button -> Advanced -> enter the location where you extracted the drivers
    3. After the drivers are installed, go back to step 2 and this time, goto the advanced tab instead of the driver tab.
    4. Make sure your power settings are set to least power management, max signal strength.

This is what I had to do for my unit, but it works flawlessly now.

I tried everything you suggested, VB. Nothing worked, unfortunately. The instant I open a browser, I get a message stating that whatever site I tried to access could not be found. This, despite my wireless connection constantly being Excellent - Very Good. I even tried accessing the internet via some of the unprotected wireless networks in my building... same result. I really hope the Atheros card I ordered fixes this annoying problem.

    Okay, figure out this one...

I turned off the WEP security on my 2200BG. Immediately, my card connected to the unprotected wireless networks in my building. Next, I copied the 128-bit WEP code key that I had saved in a text file, pasted it into the appropriate field, and then turned on WEP security. I got an Excellent connection to my router, as expected. Just for kicks, I double-clicked on the Firefox browser icon and was greeted by a fully functional and speedy internet/e-mail session. Everything works just as if I had my cable modem plugged directly into my notebook's hi-speed port. So, I'm left with just one question...

    WTF?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Well, it looks like you entered the incorrect key on one of the sides during the configuration. Even though you get excellent signal strength with the router, it doesn't mean it'll give you access. This is one area you must be very careful, 1 wrong character and it's not going to work. But it's good to see it's working for you again.

I see lots of people post with weird connection issues, and I wonder if any of them have considered that somebody might be trying to hack their WEP? It's easy to do and instructions are all over the net.

Yes noah, WPA is the way to go instead of WEP, but people think its good enough.

Sure it didn't seem to be the case this time, because he checked the key and got on.
However, I have seen lots of other reports where people can't seem to keep a connection and I just wonder if somebody is trying to hack them, because kicking the client of the AP is the first step in the attack.

What exact type of linksys router do you have? Try to hook up a wired connection with your router and see if it happens.
I have the WRT54g ver. 1, and the internet will die after a few hours of use. Then I have to disable and renable my connection. If you have this, try to update the firmware. I modified my to support voip, so I can't do the offical firmware anymore.

No gecko, he is not having a problem, just some thoughts on why it wont work. I have the same router except v. 3.1 Which is flawless.

On a different train of thought here.

Our ISP (Telus Canada) seems to have issues with certain routers.. not sure on the brands.. but when they ping the connection to retrieve data on usage... data in data out.. the router treats this as an attack and the connection drops.

Ended up having to buy a different router to clear this problem up... lol.. it was driving me around the bend. Only after talking with Telus were we able to sort this issue out.

Could this be part of your problem?.. just my 2cents.

This is an very old post...

and its a well known fact that Intel 2200BG is very unstable, I have tested 6/7 of these card and they are all the same. However I think its due to the drivers, as I had one with no problem and then after a fresh windows reinstall it started oing it too.
