    Hello everyone,

I have a coworker who I gave my old ibm thinkpad t40 to.

He had his friend reinstall windows xp on it.

I have been to Lenovo site, and have downloaded every single driver available on there for this model, and I still cannot get the wireless, sound, or ethernet to work on it.

When I goto system and click hardware manager.... I see question marks next to all of these key pieces.

I do not know what more I can do here... I have gone to Lenovo and downloaded every available driver.

    Am I missing something here?

I feel bad that I gave him this laptop that he cannot even use yet.

    Windows XP w/ SP2?

You have to install the networking devices via Device Manager.

    Ethernet: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-54046

    1. Extract this package onto your hard drive.
    2. Start Windows XP.
    3. Click Start, then click Control Panel.
    4. Click Performance and Maintenance and System icon.
    5. Click the Hardware tab.
    6. Click Device Manager.
    7. Right-click Ethernet Controller in "Other devices" and click Properties.
    8. Click the Driver tab.
    9. Click Update Driver...
    10. Select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)
    11. Click Next in "Hardware Upgrade Wizard" dialog box.
    12. Select "Search for the best driver in these locations." and
"Include this location in the search:" only.
    13. Specify the path to one of the following sub-directories with the full path name
where you extracted the package in step 1 in "Include this location in the search:".
    "PRO100\WS03XP32" (for "Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection")
    "PRO1000\WS03XP32" (for "Intel(R) PRO/1000 MT Mobile Connection")
    14. Click Next.
    The driver installation starts.
    15. Click Finish when the installation completes.
    16. Click Close.

    Audio: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-61604

    Modem: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4ZFS2T

    UAA: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-65456

    1. Extract the Audio Driver file you downloaded.
    2. Extract the Modem Driver file you downloaded.
    3. Install the Universal Audio Architecture (UAA).
    4. During UAA installation, it will prompt you saying new hardware is found.
    5. Choose option "No, not this time".
    6. Choose "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)".
    7. Choose "Search for the best driver in these locations".
    8. Uncheck all but "Include this location in the search:".
    9. Browse for "c:\drivers\win\audio\smaxwdm\w2k_xp".
    10. After installation of the audio, wait and it will prompt you for the modem driver.
    11. Repeat steps 5-8.
    12. Browse for "c:\drivers\hdamodem\win2kxp".
    13. Hit finish.
    14. Hit finish again to close the UAA window.

I don't know which Wireless card you have but you have to install it using Device Manager (similar to the ethernet instructions).

    Thanks for the below.

I was able to get my built in ethernet working.

I am still having an issue with the wireless, I have downloaded every available driver on the Lenovo website, and did the below process I did for activating the ethernet.

It seems like none of the drivers are working. I still have a yellow question mark for Network Controller and Unknown Device.

I am going to try the audio fix on monday, but that should do the trick as well.

Thank you for the below instructions.

I have the same problem. Tried what you told me, and I still can't get my wireless to work. I have an intel(R) PRO/1000 MT Mobile Connection (the error it gives me is errorcode 10, a.i. it's not working)

Besides that, I have 3 other devices that are not working (part of 'other devices'): network controller; unknown device and SM-buscontroller. What are these and what do I need to do to get them to work?

Don't know what to do. And I'm a complete disaster when it comes down to Computers.... :(
