    ok is this possible,

i want to set my desktop pc to share files wirelessly via my router, BUT i want it to be able to browse the internet via the router also, currently i have it set up like

cable modem>linksys wrt54g>notebook (wifi) and desktop (wired)

if that diagram make sense, or would i have to make it go from the modem to the desktop to the router? (i'll draw a better diagram when i finish work)

That's the way it should be set-up.

Have your Linksys get it's IP addressing from the cable modem.
Turn on NAT on the Linksys, and have your desktop & laptop get their IP addressing from it.

dhcp or static ips will work fine you just need to share the files you wanna see on your pc. I have my dsl going to a usr8054 then my linksys 54gs modded connects to the 8054 to let a pc in a far room get internet. Static ip on all my computers just put in the gateway as the router and you can search for computers by name or ip to access the shares. Note my dsl modem is a cayman 3346 4 lan ports so my pc is directly connected to it.

You shouldn't have to do anything to the router other than what I said above. As long as both computers are on the same subnet (ie. 192.168.0.xxx / 255.255.255.0), both computers are in the same workgroup, and your folders are shared out with either Everyone or with the same username/password used to sign onto both computers; then everything should work.
