Is there a way to get internet access for my laptop through my cellphone without paying more for a mobile hot spot?

A friend of mine has an unlimited data plan through at&t for her cell phone. Is it possible for her to get unlimited internet access on her laptop without paying any additional money through her cell phone?

I went to best buy with my friend and they said she had to buy a mobile hot spot plan which was expensive and not worth it (better to just get a regular home internet connection). But I thought there might be a way to connect her telephone directly to her laptop and get internet that way.

    Thanks.

Usually it's through tethering. However that depends on your phone and provider.

You can also try an app like OpenGarden or something similar. But some providers can detect if you are using tethering unauthorized and potentially throttle you.
