Im getting all my phone upgraded to voip for att on the 31st. I was just wondering if anyone knows if the voice signal is compressed or uncompressed data, and if its compressed what compression method do they use? G.723, G.728 ... you get the idea thanks!

Are you getting the AT&T U-verse setup? If so, I've read that U-verse does not use compression, because they have home alarms that can be added to the VOIP configuration, and compression can screw up the alarm monitoring system.

Yes i am getting it through the u-verse setup. I guess thats good to know that the voice quality will be higher, but it will chew a chunk out of the internet bandwidth...64kbs if im not mistaken?

a chunk? How is 64kbps a chunk? Your total bandwidth is at the very least 1.5Mbps

6Mbps, but its still a chunk when you have 6 computers, a server, xbox 360 and wii, and various handheld wifi devices all sharing the bandwidth with the phone.

you shouldnt have an issue. and depending on your service you cant have a "server" on residential broadband packages. but I guess that depends on what your "server" is doing.

as for the VOIP. thats hardly a chunk out of 6Mb/s. set up some QOS so voip gets priority and you wont even notice a thing.

ah alright no biggy on the server then. I would not be the least concerned with b/w. you got plenty for a single voip line. which wont be used all the time.
just buy the equipment and have fun!
