The 2 are apples and oranges.

WiMax is "a standards-based technology enabling the delivery of last mile wireless broadband access as an alternative to cable and DSL."

and WiFi is "a wireless technology brand owned by the Wi-Fi Alliance intended to improve the interoperability of wireless local area network products based on the IEEE 802.11 standards."

WiMax can use WiFi and other wireless data transmission technologies, such as cellular and microwave, in it's network.
