Has anyone heard of this before? I learned about it a little while back and I truly find it fascinating.

Basically, the internet started as a way for universities to share information...now today its so bogged down with spam and youtube traffic that its original purpose was lost...Enter Internet2. It is a separate backbone for universities to communicate together. Go to a research university? You probably are on internet2.

Actually, the forebear of the internet was ARPANet, which was developed under the aegis of, and with money from, the Department of Defense - it certainly included Universities, however, because that's where a lot of the defense research went on.

It wasn't something quite so idealistic and rosy as the OP's post seems to imply (although, then again, I'm thorough-going cynic, so perhaps I over-read it).
