How do I go about getting internet on my laptop? Like with wifi where you get internet anywhere you want as long as it is in a "hot spot" What do I have to do to get that?

You need to buy a wireless router as most new laptops should come with a wirless internet card installed. Go to a local store that sells computers and computer stuff, and ask for a WIRLESS router. Should be able to get one for $75.

Don't mess with any that are pre 11n. And Stay away from belkin. My preference is a Dlink or Netgear. Linksys have made their main seller WRT54G ?????? They changed firmware and killed the performace. If you but a Linksys WRT54G make sure it is a v4 or the GL model.

Hot spots are places where they have free Wireless connections, usually from a Library, Coffee Shop, etc. They are usually named and when you first connect, direct you to a page about the business itself - and its usually a secure connection.

If you want a connection at home so you can roam around, getting a router with your current ISP is the best way.

As well, if you want WiFi anywhere, you'll have to purchase special modems/routers and services which provide you with Wireless almost everywhere.

Not all hotspots are free. There are also 'pay' hotspots, like T-Mobile has ( Hotspot). You pay a monthly fee and you can use any T-Mobile's hotspot that you come accross. Some of those hotspots are at places that may charge you a much higher per hour/day/etc charge if you don't have the monthly plan (ie, T-Mobile provides wireless hotspots at Hyatt hotels, but for a daily charge). If you're lucky enough to live inside a T-Mobile hotspot, this could be a very economical alternative to a DSL or cable line. There are other companies that provide similar services.
