    Internet keeps disconnecting and reconnecting

    I've been having issues with my laptop continuously disconnecting and reconnecting from the internet over and over again. I have tried the following:

    1. disabling/re-enabling network adapter
    2. uninstalling and reinstalling network adapter
    3. using LAN instead of wireless- the connection still wont run as it normally should
    4. scanning my computer for viruses: I found a trojan horse and removed it.

    No one else at home seems to be having the same problem that I have.
    Its not that my internet has abnormally slow or anything. Sometimes it disconnects and reconnects so much and so fast that I hardly notice (at other times it can really lag).It bugs me because I am never able to fully load a youtube clip and msn/skype/gmail keep logging me in and out.

    Help :(

    It sounds like your laptop is having an issue establishing its DHCP Lease when it expires. Or there is a corruption in your TCP/IP stack or Winsock. I recommend setting up either a DHCP reservation for your pc inside your router, if it supports it. Or assign a static IP and DNS to your laptop. Just make sure the static IP is outside the DHCP range that is setup in the router. Next, since this is most likely a Windows PC, pull up your command prompt as an Administrator and type in the following.

    netsh winsock reset catalog

    and

    netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

    After that, reboot your PC and test it.

    It could be possible that you are far away (or many walls exist between you and the router) from your router (signal strength would be low), then you should try using the internet closer. Another possibility is that your wifi card is bad at its job or your router is FAILING.

    Thanks for your reply. I tried assigning a static IP and DNS for my laptop, but to no avail. I also tried the above in command prompt, but I'm still having issues.

    I did try restarting in safe mode and the problem was gone. I now think its some kind of software issue or maybe a virus? I've run several virus scanners though and nothing seems to come up

    What kind of Firewall are you running? Also, are you using one of those all inclusive Internet Security Suites, ie Norton? If you are running Norton, McAfee, or AVG, uninstall it and test again.

    Also, when you say you tried assigning a static IP and DNS to no avail, do you mean you couldn't get it to work or the issue was still happening?

    Lastly, do you use a third party wireless software to connect to Access Points or are you using Windows? I recommend using Windows if you're not doing so already.

    Check your router/access point logs, how long is the uptime. If it isn't days, the router could be crashing and rebooting every now and then.
