I have a 1210 and the internet will not work unless when using wireless. I use the ethernet cable from my parents computer and plug it into my computer. The internet works fine on their computer but once I plug it into my 1210 it doesnt work. I have checked my network connections under control panel and everything is connected.

    Any Ideas?

    Thanks

What does your ipconfig display? (if you don't know how to find out click Start -> Run and then type cmd. In the command window type ipconfig and press return).

If there is nothing being displayed I'd try disabling all internet adaptors and flushing the dns by typing

    ipconfig /flushdns

    in the command window.

This will clear your computer of any dns settings it had saved.

Then once that has finished, go to your ethernet connection in the connections manager and enabling it again.

Once it's enabled, type ipconfig into your command window and see if anything has changed. You might be able to diagnose the problem better once you see the results.

can you ping the router or any website?

    (in the command window type

    ping xxx.xxx.xx.xx

where x is the address of your router or type

    ping -a www.awebaddress.com

(I'm sorry - I don't know if you know all this stuff already so for completeness I'm just adding it in))

I will try those in just a minute. It now says that I have limited or no connectivity. However, once I plug it back into my parents computer it works fine.

    Thanks

I think its my parents computer because they have a firewall or something. Windows said that I have limited/connectivity because of the network, not the computer.

    Any Ideas?

Of course your internet doesn't work! Quickset disabled it by default to save power on battery. Just tell Quickset to enable it by default

My notebook is plugged in. I checked quickset and I dont see a setting for desabling internet.

Any Ideas? Since my wireless isnt picking up good signals and I cant use my parents connection I have to use my parents very old computer and its annoying.

    Thanks

I just fixed it. I called dell support and after an hour we finally figured it out.

When I switch the internet cable from my desktop to my notebook, I have to unplugg the cable modem, pressing the reset button will do nothing.

Isnt that weird? Anyone know why you have to turn the modem off every time I switch it?

could be that your laptop isn't registering it and gettting an IP. If you are switching all the time, you might want to invest in a router. This way you wouldn't have to switch.

I'm going to move this to the wireless forum. I think you'll get better answers about the modem problem over there.

you have to reset the modem because the MAC address of your notebook's network card and the MAC of your parents' computer's network card are different. The MAC is used to differentiate between different physical devices.

So, when you plug in your parents' computer, the modem registers their MAC to be given an IP, and then when you just try to plug your computer in, the MAC isn't correct, so it balks.

Thanks for all the replies. I would invest in a router but I am only at my parents house a few weeks out of the year and dont see the point in getting the router.
