    Hi all,

I'm not sure if this should go here or in the Dell forum, but I'm having problems setting up my internet connection on my new Dell Inspiron E1505. It comes with Windows Vista Home Premium.

I have SBC Yahoo! DSL, and my Windows XP laptop and old Windows 98 computer both connect fine. I don't remember exactly how I set it up on the XP laptop, but for the Windows 98 computer I first put in the Home Network setup CD and then put in the SBC Yahoo! DSL cd to install it. But the Dell E1505 didn't come with a home network setup CD, so I just put the DSL installation CD in and ran it. It works fine until after it's copying programs to my new laptop, and then after a while an error message pops up from Windows saying the TCP/IP configuration utility has stopped working, so I click the Close Program button. The DSL setup then seems to continue on, and at the end it asks me to shut down while I set up the adapter or something (my XP laptop is the one 'hosting' the connection). After I restart, another error message pops up saying the WebWorks MFC application (which I assume is the installation program) stops working, and I don't know what to do after that.

Sorry for the long post, but does anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

P.S. I'm not sure if this helps, but my SBC Yahoo! DSL uses just phone lines, and on my old Windows 98 computer I just plug in the phone line and set it up and it works.

2 things to check. First the default workgroup for Vista is not the same as XP so make sure you have them all on the same network name or they won't connect. Also you should right click on the .exe file (ww mfc app I assume) and go up to run as administrator, I don't know if this is the problem but it may help out. Post your results and we will go from here.

Thanks for the reply, but how do you check the network name? I'm logged on as administrator so I don't think #2 is the problem, but I'll check.

Is your network wireless? If yes, then you have to try to connect wirelessly. Make sure that your wireless car is enabled and in your network properties look for networks to connect to, you will need your wireless wep key. GL

No, it's wired. All I have to connect is the modem, but whenever I connect the modem to my Vista laptop the whole network fails..even my older XP laptop can't go online. But when I disconnect the modem from the E1505 then the connection works with the XP.

One problem is that the SBC Yahoo! DSL installer isnt even installing properly, the errors I said in the first post keep popping up. But even if that isnt installing, I should still be able to access my home network right? but it's not setup right or something. Any ideas on how to set up home network first?

When you are using Vista as an administrator you are still not the administrator. It still runs in "protected mode" that why sometimes you have to run as, now if you logged in as admin then you won't have to give credentials but it's not the same as admin in XP. Vista's built in security tools.

I'm at work right now (XP Pro) but when I get home I will logon to the Vista machine to get the info about how to set the network name. My apologies for the delay.

Thanks. I'm not sure what this means, but I tried running the IPCONFIG utility on the SBC Yahoo! cd, and it says "Ordinal 1001 is missing from wsock32.dll" or something like that, and then the Windows error message comes up.

I don't think thats the problem because I tried running ipconfig tool from the CD on XP laptop and it gave me same error, but the internet is working.

Maybe this helps more: Whenever I plug in the DSL modem into my Vista laptop (doesn't matter if it's on or off), the Broadband Link light on the 2wire HomePortal starts blinking orange upstairs (it's connected to my XP laptop) and eventually turns red. But once I disconnect it from my Vista laptop it goes green again.

The last 2wire I did, was a little flakey. Make sure you clone your MAC address of the PC used to setup the account into the router. With out it you loose your connection info.

Also Vista for some dumb reason default to IP6. Check your port properties and force it to IP4.

I think this problem might be related to why I can't install the SBC Yahoo! DSL software. Here's exactly what happens when I put in the installatin CD:

    1. Installer pops up, everything is fine
    2. I go through the first couple steps with no problems (just Next, or I agree options)
    3. It asks me if this is the first computer to connect to home network; I answer No because my XP laptop upstairs is the first)
    4. Go through next couple of steps and it installs
    5. Waits while its "Copying Program Files..."
    6. When it finishes copying a message from Windows says "TCP/IP Configuration Utility has stopped working." and I have to click "close program."
    7. The installer keeps going however, and at the end it makes me shut down and continue the installation on restart.
    8. Once the computer restarts, another error message from Windows saying "WebWorks MFC application has stopped working." I assume this is the installer.

My question is why does this happen? I know somebody who also recently bought a Vista laptop and has SBC Yahoo DSL, but his install went smoothly. Getting a bit frustrated that it won't install on my latop.

You do not need to install it on a second computer if you already have the account setup. Make sure your router is set for DHCP and you have the nic port set for IP4, not def IP6. It should then be able to get a IP address and connect to the www.

Really? I was thinking that was the problem because whenever I connect the modem to my Vista laptop the Broadband link light on the 2wire HomePortal blinks orange and sometimes goes to red (I think this means that it's searching for a broadband connection, red means it failed to find it). It doesn't matter if the laptop is on or off, but the moment I pull the modem from the laptop the HomePortal goes back to normal and I can use Internet on the other 2 computers (XP and windows 98).

I checked and the workgroup name is the same (both HOME).

One or to things are happening.

SBC is looking at the MAC address of the pc and is not seeing the one registered with the account. If this is the case you need to make the router act as a router and not a bridge. The clone the MAC address of the pc used to setup the account into the 2wire.

Your Vista nic port is set to IP6 (default). This needs to be IP4.

Look on your XP pc and see if it has a public or private IP address. If private clone the MAC address.

    Hi MrWatt~
Have you fixed your problem with the SBC Yahoo DSL and your Dell Inspiron E1505? I am having the exact same problem. Just purchased the Dell E1505 with Vista and I have SBC Yahoo DSL. 4 times now I have called Dell and I have spent hours each time talking to them. They have no clue! They are sending me a new wireless card - who knows if that will fix the problem. Any advise you can give me will be a big help. Thanks! Kelli
