    Hi

    I have an Inspiron 6400

It has mostly had no major networkming issues before

I run XP Home on it.

There was a failed update of SP3. I think i've managed to remove it, however, I now appear to have an internet connection issue.

I can conect to both wireless and LAN fine. I have done so on two seperate networks and have been able to ping all other computers on the networks just fine. I have even been copying downloaded files accross from this computer to help diagnose the problem so i am confident - as far as LAN/wireless goes - i can connect just fine. attempts to ping any interent pages fails.

But: Internet is not happening. Any and all softeware that can connect to the net cannot do so from my laptop. The net works fine on all other PCs.

    I have tried:

    Reseting the tcp/ip
    using a winsock repair utility
installing new drivers for the network card (from DELL's webpage)
    Turning the firewall off
i have looked at all the network settings i can think of (i am not an expert though ) and cant see anything funny about any of them.
the proxy settings etc have not been changed from prior to the issue

at the same time the interent went down firefox began behaiving very strangely - ie it would not launch properly - i uninstalled it and deleted its folder and re-installed but it is still being temperamental (i dont know if this is releveant or not but since it happened at the same time i mention it)

    any suggestions?

    all help is much appreciated.

also every other PC on the 2 networks i have worked on can use the internet just fine. It is just the one laptop that cant.

It's possible that the failed SP3 update messed with something deep in the guts of the OS that isn't showing itself for what it is. Were you ever able to get a subsequent install of SP3 to take?

Have you checked the event logs to see if there are any log entries that might indicate what the problem is?

Have you tried doing a system restore to a point before you attempted the SP3 install?

The simplest solution is probably to format the system partition, reinstall the OS, immediately do the SP3 update before anything else gets a chance to muff things up, and then see what happens.

    Thanks for the replies.

No I have not been able to make SP3 take - i had a series of issues with the beethov9.wma not copying over and had to go on the road the next day so tried to leave ti all until i came back.

I'm afraid i don't know how to check the logs, it would cool if that could be explained.

I'm on the road for another week so a full re-install is not even possible until then :(

    ty again
