Is there actually any real world difference in performance between the two?

Not from my experience. I have the 5300 in my Alienware M15X and the 6300 in my Precision m4500. I don't notice any difference at all. Both are 3x3 and up to 450mbps with the proper router, and both are dual band. Not sure what the specific differences are, but they appear identical according to their main specifications.

There is no discernible difference between the two, both are excellent cards. the 6300 is newer.
