Is anyone having problems with using WPA with there Intel 2200bg? For some reason if I try using WPA I have a hard time aquring an address. It takes a while to obtain an ip address from the rotuer. I am able to connect fine with WEP and and without encryption. I have hp dv1000
I called hp because I seem to be having problem connecting to my router using WPA, and they told me it only uses WEP with 64 bit and 128 encryption. I have all latest drivers and software installed. I only testes my wireless with my friends laptop and it connects fine using WPA, but he has a broadcom wireless bg card. I am able to connect fine using WEP and no encryption, but I am having problems with WPA, I keep getting message trying to "aquirnig address"
Hp is telling me that the overall hardware in the laptop does not support WPA key but WEP only even thought I have the latest drivers from intel and the latest hot fixes from Mircosoft SP 2. My thinking was the encryption is based on the type of wireless card you have!
I have all updated firmware for my wrt54g router linksys. I used my buddies laptop( presario) everything works fine with his broadcom bg wirelss
Does anything think this maybe an hardware issue with the intel wireless card?
-
Wait, sorry, i dont know what the heck i was thinking, sorry.

Are you kidding me! I am finding that some people are able to use WPA with no problems! So are you telling me with the latest drivers from intel for 2200bg, it still will not support WPA?
How are some people able to use WPA? I have all the latest hot fixes from for windows etc. -
No problems using 2200bg & linksys WRT54GC.
WPA2 presonal, AES-CCMP in intel PROSet v9.0.2.1 -
Mine is current as of 7/19/2005 Driver 9.0.2.31, is this the same one? If so I am having problems with WPA. Lately I have been having an issue with obtaining an IP from the rotuer under WPA security. -
Same driver version 7/19/2005 9.0.2.31, and I'm using Intel soft "Intel PROSet Wireless" not Windows.
Service "Wireless Zero Configuration" is disabled on my comp.
I also use static IPs everywhere. -
-
I assume you use WPA personal, so you can use one of theese WEP/TKIP/AES - each of them requires key which you have to enter in proset and in the router settings.
You don't need any encription with Ethernet cable. So you can connect to the router using the cable & web interface & default ip of the router and put in you key and maybe some other setting need to be changed.
If you cannot connect to the router using default ip addr & cable then setting for the wireless connection in windows ControlPanel->NetworkConnections need to be changed like Default gateway, mask or computer ip -

Hard to say what the problem is.

You might have another wireless device with the same IP in the house.

Linksys has WRT54G V5.0 on the web site, this one supports WPA. Maybe you got like version 2. You downloaded right firmaware? right revision?
-
I have Firmware Version : v4.20.7
-
I just downloaded manual from amazon.com. There is nothing mentioned about WPA. Downloaded from linksys - there is WPA. You better figure out what version/revision you got.
I read reviews on amazon. None of the customers (I guess who bought it) mentioned WPA. But Spotlight Reviews does.
Call linksys and ask. -
Actually try the setup on the linksys site. I remeber when i recall doing it that way, everythin g went a lot smoother, even with WPA.

I am checking it out now in IE -
Yeah, i think i had that to. It will work.
-
-
LOL, i got that to, just retry it again and it will work.

I have, I need to fix my intel 2200bg problem.
-
Just try to redo the setup again and it will work.

I had issues with WPA on my 2200BG when I first got my laptop. Turns out it was the router. I got a new router model and it havent had a problem since.

I have the same issue with a new Dell Latitud D610 that my company gave me.
With my D-Link 624 router I was using the D-Link card with WPA on my previous Old-Dell laptop without any problem.
Now, this new laptop came with Intel Proset/wireless 2200GB but I can't enable WPA even though I have the last driver (9.0.2.31) and last software (9.0.2.11) installed.
WEP-128 works fine though.
Since I can't install SP2 for XP (company policy) I have intalled all the updates for Windows XP-SP1 related to wi-fi, including WPA support.... no luck.
If anyone knows the solution to this please let me know.
I'll keep using WEP-128.
Thanks. -
Exact same issue I am having.

I have an HP nx8220 with the Intel 2200BG and I have WPA-TKIP setup without any problems. The version of drivers for my WiFi is 1 version back from the lastest. I don't believe WPA2 is supported on the 2200BG's, so don't try using that.
You can try enabling the SSID Broadcasting and see if that helps with the detection.
Another couple possibilities are that you have a compatibility problem with your router. I myself run an SMC router and have not come across any problems.
And the last possibility is that your WiFi card could be defective. Have you tried getting it replaced/repaired? Give that a try and see if it helps.

Hello fellow 2200bg sufferers.
I have a similar setup to wboo and it does cause some real problems.
I updated the firmware on my linksys wrt54g to the lastest version (as of last week) Up until that point, I couldn't use the latest drivers from intel and WPA encryption.
Even with my current setup, when I initiate a connection using DHCP on the router, XP uses some other IP address which is incompatible with the network. I know this, so I have to perform a "repair connection" from the network connections page every time I want to use my wireless device and DHCP.
Only then does it receive the IP address and DNS settings from the DHCP server on the linksys router. I think it's a problem with timing/handshake from linksys and intel.
For wboo, I think the problem lies in your other connections. Make SURE that you disable your ethernet port and any other network connections when you want to use the 2200BG. If you don't, you'll get a never ending cycle of acquiring network address. If your not sure if you have any other connections active, go to the run program line
Type cmd
in the new window, type:
ipconfig /all
That will let you know what XP thinks are network connections in your computer.
Hope this rant helps.

Were you able to get it working with WPA using your method? For the last few weeks I have been using WEP. I've been having problem using the Intel Proset software as well, I have better luck using the Windows utility. I would pefer to use WPA instead of using WEP but my connection does not stay connected using WPA.
-
I am using WPA encryption using the intel wireless tools. It works, it just takes a bit of patience to get it started, but once up, it's is stable.
Dev -
The problem is, I haven't gotten it stable as of yet. I keep loosing my connection using WPA.
-
My apologies, I stand corrected. Since I'm not using the lastest drivers, my current drivers don't support WPA2. I did check Intel's site and the newest drivers support WPA2 encryption.

Wboo, when you say you are losing your connection, is it over a few seconds, then lost, or is it a few minutes, then dropped?
Dev -
In my case, it never connects using WPA. However using WEP-128 it works great.
It could be a compatibility issue between Intel and my D-Link 624. Who knows...
I'm also getting dropped packages and short disconnections from time to time (ie:MSN Messenger disconnects), but this also happens while using my PC directly connected to the router, so this is another issue which started happening (as far as I remember) when I got the last firmware from D-Link (2.70 for 624.rev-C). Then I did reset my router and went back to a previous firmware (2.53), but it's still happening. It looks like the upgrade to version 2.70 broke my router???
It sounds like a DHCP problem to me.
I'm going to try 2.70 again if I have time during the weekend, just to see what happens.
