You are not going crazy. I am having the exact same problem with an Intel Network adapter and Vista Home Premium Service Pack 1. I have tried to update my driver but get the message that my driver is up to date.

I have found two good posts that get me further -- I still lose my network connection after idling for a few hours but can get it back by rebooting. I still need to solve that problem. But before I did the following, I could not bring back my internet connection by doing any of the following: (1) changing the ethernet cable to a brand new one (2) unplugging the ethernet cable and putting it into a new router port (3) turning off and on my router (Linksys Wireless-G 2.4GHz Broadband Router) (4) turning off and on my modem or even (5) rebooting my computer!

One post said to turn OFF powersaving mode for my network adapter. It was enabled by default. As soon as I unchecked the box to do powersaving on this device (via the Device Drivers window, Network adapter device), my internet connection came back on. With this new setting, I still lose my internet connection after my computer idles for a few hours but I can reboot and get it back again.

The other post said that many older routers can't handle IPv6 which Vista enables. So it said to disable IPv6 and use only IPv4. I did this, too, but this did not seem to help. Actually when I made this change, my internet connection did come back right away but disappeared a few hours later when idling again.

It's strange that I can't get my connection to come back by turning the router on/off or unplugging and replugging the ethernet cable or ANYTHING except rebooting. I cannot seem to reset this network adapter device. When Vista offers to "repair" the connection, I get only that the cable is "unplugged". Just like for you.

Maybe turning off powersaving mode will at least help you as it has definitely helped me. Please post if you figure out the problem! Thanks.

try running a command prompt (type "cmd" in the start menu without the quotes) and then type:
    "ipconfig /release" <enter>
    "ipconfig /renew" <enter>
obviously without quotes and pressing enter at the <enter> prompts...

Use drivers supplied by the manufacturer (on their website), not by Windows Update.

I agree with Bog, get the drivers directly from the manufacturer, Windows vista will always tell you that you have the most up to date driver, when is not.

Now, when you are connected to the router, do you see the home network?
