I don't exactly remember, but I think that the 5300 has more antenna ins and outs and higher power. I currently have the 5100 and have no problems with it, but I would've gone with the 5300 if given the choice.

Go check out reviews on this forum by searching out 5300 reviews. From what I have read the 5100 is worse than its predecessor the 4965 (which i have) and the 5300 is quite a good card. They wouldn't recommend the 5100, but they definitely recommend the 5300. And for the extra few dollars... why not?

5300 is a significant jump up on the 5100 in both speeds, range and stability. You will find a lot of posts on various boards on the 5100, less issues with the 5300. To maximize the speed of the 5300 a dual band router is best.

    http://www.intel.com/network/connectivity/products/wireless/adapters/5000/index.htm

My ACER 1410 came with the 5100 and it works well on both bands (2.4 & 5)

I believe that the advantage that the 5300 offers to the 5100 is that it can receive BOTH bands at the same time, thus 450 Mbs vs "only" 300Mbs on the 5100.

In a home environment we rarely see a network that can download 50 mbs, so it really doesn't matter ;)

I have tested the download speed of my Acer 1410 at about 20 ft and thru one wall at 50 Mbs. That is very fast and responsive.

I believe that getting a good modem and router is much more important than the card in your laptop. If the signal isn't getting into your network than the capacity of your computer doesn't really matter. IMHO

The 5300 can conceivably get better coverage even on legacy networks due to the third antenna (if used). Even on a 1x1 connection the card will choose whichever is strongest, or possibly use diversity.

For the aftermarket there is little reason to not get a 5300 over a 5100, the price is virtually the same in my experience.
