    Hello all,

How do I know if I got a genuine one or not? The one I have has only few lines written on the front and on the back label just a bare code.

    Thanks

I figured since you've already had yours, then, although this might not necessarily true, the easiest way is comparing its real MAC address read through software, such as from its Network Connection Details or executing "ipconfig /all" from command prompt, vs. the address written on its label.

    I'd like to know too
    they're only like $20 right?
I just got a wireless N router, is it worth it to get a wireless N card for my laptop?

I'd say why not? Go spend that $20 since you have N router already. It'll boost the speed when transferring files between computers. And change all your wireless cards to N, if you haven't. That's what I did.

No there are still some Engineer samples being sold as retail or OEM.
Having said that I have a retail one in my Dell M1330 XPS and have used 2 engineer samples all matched the retail one.
Engineer samples had the text Engineer samples on the lable in the past..
For the price go for it kirkus..

I've found when I was still using ES version of 5300 inside my Studio 17 that it made the WIFI light blinks upon wireless traffic/usage and it had quite a few connection drops although located next to the wireless router. After changing to 'the real' 5300, connection drops barely happen and WIFI light stays lit in concurrence with wireless switch turned on.

The ebay seller i bought from (4seadeal) is a USA seller. I returned the card to him and he is willing to refund or exchange. I told him I will try one more card from him to see if that works before I ask for a refund. He has been nice enough and hasnt given me any problems so its worth it.

He has no idea if they are ES or not. Either he is playing dumb or he bought it from some where else and is clueless himself.

Bought a 5300 this weekend from eBay user paris$lau, and the MAC address in Windows matched the one on the label. I haven't noticed any connection drops, but I did note that it makes the WiFi light on my Inspiron 1520 blink when there is heavy traffic. Another friend of mine with the 5300 and a Vostro 1500 noticed the same phenomenon with the WiFi light. Not sure exactly why the light blinks - it didn't with the Broadcom ABG card and the manual doesn't say what that means - but it's not a problem so long as the connection works well.

Yes it did the same for me. Even though the connection didnt drop where window tells you network disconnected and then reconnected. I did notice my connection speed fluctuated a lot and most of the time it was around 5.5 mbps and then at times jumped to 300 mbps. It was extremely annoying and at that rate i was getting slower data transfer rates then with my G card which stayed at a steady 54mbps.

Keep an eye on your connection speed.

Finally recieved the new replacement 5300 from the same dealer. Same issue, connection speed really fluctuates and wifi light blinks. I am gonna return and and ask for a full refund.

The label is white underneath which I think means its a ES or fake label. What a waste of time.

I dont even know where else to buy the card from....

Another Ebay seller. Did you compare the MAC address? I bought mine from ebay user "dshien"

If the description says it is not an ES card and the picture shows a correct label of a non-ES card, it is pretty safe to assume that it is not an ES card. Doing this worked for me.

fyi they are now printing fake labels as CONFIRMED directly by intel after sending them in a sample card that was said not to be a es and had the full retail style label on it. intel said there were a few minor differences on the board and it is 1000% a es card that was shipped. so it doesnt matter who you order them from pretty much any more. and they also said you can not tell simply by the mac address even an es sample unless RE-LABLED should match the mac to the card.. makes 0 difference

ive been buying mostly the mini dell versions of these cards as they are labeled correctly with the actual dell part number and serial numbers i called dell and they confirmed the one i checked on. the mini ones (half height) imo work the same as the standard size ones. i have both and there is 0 difference. the half height gets a tiny bit warmer but after actually feeling both there is little difference in them both were totally acceptable temps

The label on mine is not the label of an ES (they say "engineering sample") and the MAC address matches the one on the card. Also don't all the ES cards use the same MAC address? I can't find it online right now, but mine was different. The card is also the strongest and most stable wireless card I have, exactly the same as my 100% legit 5100 I got from Dell and better than everything else, so even if it is an ES, which I seriously doubt, I wouldn't really care since I can't tell the difference, it works flawlessly, and it doesn't share a MAC address with other cards.

Yeah, all but one of my laptops use the half height. If your laptop was meant for the full height ones, how do you get the half size ones to stay without screwing them in?

Yeah What are my other options besides the 5300? I think I wanna buy from any where buy ebay.

I saw the 5300 on cdw.com for 39 bucks. I hate the idea of being forced to buy from china and waiting 20 days for the card and who knows if it will be the ES with a fake label.

Give me some options for other cards with a seller in USA.

FYI, nitehawke at Dell section posted a tutorial to stop the blinking LED,
and make the LED on constantly in windows :
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5337400&postcount=6
    *credit to nitehawke

I have an ES card from ebay (just realized after I installed ),
the MAC doesn't match and it's blinking, but it works fine.
Now the LED doesn't blink anymore and I don't care if the MAC doesn't macth,
I'm using it at home :D

no all es do not use the same mac. depends who you buy from some have shipped from the same sellers with the same mac they were made in batches. i have a dozen or so es cards all with different mac's so that is 100% false.
and doesnt matter what the label looks like anymore intel has sated most china sellers are printing fake labels marking es as retail cards.

to make a half height fit i make a small bracket out of a thin piece of aluminum and simply make the holes in it. works perfect. i can post a diagram if you want

So what you're telling me is that there may be no possible way to tell between an ES and a retail version of the 5300? Then what does it matter if there is no difference?

Ok, I'm convinced I have a real one. I haven't found anything about any ES 5300 that had a non-ES sticker on it that matched the MAC address of the card itself. Everything I could find online shows 2 variations of ES cards being sold; those with an ES sticker, and those with non-matching MAC addresses. This is the best wireless card I have and the only reason it is suspect is that it came from Hong Kong. If anyone can think of any other way to test or see if the card is legit please let me know.

anyway, it doesn't matter whether you have ES card or not,
as long as it works ok. If you have ES card and it keeps disconnecting on you,
go and get refund from the seller.
I'm very pleased with my $14.5 Intel 5300 ES Card from ebay
(btw, it's a full height one) it never fails on me, and more good news,
    no more blinking now :D

    yes it will,
you can see on dell user manual, xps 1530 is using full height one
    http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/xpsM1530/en/SM/minicard.htm#wp1180188

you may want to check first if there's already 3 antenna cables installed though.
I'm using dell vostro 1400 with 3945ABG and it already has 3 antenna cables :)

I have a dell 1490 dual card, and it has only two antennas. Where the intel 5300 has three antennas. I believe the 5300 will work with just two antennas. Just wondering about the performance when using just two instead of three.

I was looking to upgrade my card.
I have Lenovo Ideapad Y510 but I heard that you need a specific card from Lenovo to make it word (Even though iNtel manufactures them) it has to be an iNtel card FROM Lenovo.

Also, don't you have to change the wiring that go to the Antenna? Or do they all work the same, the card itself is what draws signals?

It works perfectly fine and I could not tell any difference at all.

They normally go for about $17, including shipping, and that is for just over a dollar less because that price doesn't include shipping.
