Does having the Intel driver versus having the default Windows Update driver have any actual performance issues?

It's highly recommended to update to the most recent driver from Intel website or at least 13.1.1.1.
Previous drivers had quite serious issues on Win 7 x64- more details and symptoms here. Note- the problem is in no way related to or caused by DD-WRT- it's just described properly on their forum.
Whatever drivers Windows uses as default it's very likely it's what Intel provided them with or rather your notebook manufacturer decided to include (most likely what was up to date when your notebook has been launched)

Anyway- I'd recommend keeping drivers up to date using Intel support- it's important due to security enhancements as well as performance improvements/issues resolved.

Yep, get the newer ones from Intel.
I had corrupted transfers with one, slow transfers with another.
