Got a WEIRD problem. I procured a 5300 half-height card form my Dell Studio 14z from eBay and put it in a few days ago. Right away I had issues with it hard-locking the computer (TOTAL lockup, mouse doesn't move, keyboard doesn't respond). After chasing my tail for a while, I figured out that it seems to work great as long as I'm plugged into wall power. As soon as I go to battery power, the computer locks up. This never happened with the old card. If I disable the card in device manager, battery power works fine.

Running Win7 Home Premium 64 bit with the latest Intel drivers for the wireless card. Tried turning the transmit power on the card down to 'lowest' and it still locked up as soon as I unplugged the wall adapter.

    Ideas?

Okay, had a brainstorm right after I submitted the post and tried messing with the advanced power settings for Windows.

The options listed for Wireless Adapter Settings (Power Saving Mode) are:
    Maximum Performance
    Low Power Saving
    Medium Power Saving
    Maximum Power Saving

If the 'On battery' setting is anything other than max performance, the computer takes a dump as soon as I put it on battery power. On max performance, it seems to work fine.

Yes. It's not the first time we see this problem. It's caused by very aggressive power management in Win7.
