    My Asus G50vt-X1 came with the intel and my new Acer netbook came with the Atheros. I'm running a Netgear wireless n router and my Asus gets about 75mbps while my Acer never drops below 130mbps. Does this seem right?

    Have you checked the 5100 transmit output power in device manger , also check for other power saving modes and disable them.
