Can i add a new antenna to my Asus N50vn's Intel 5100?

Has this actually improved anybodies performance? I have Linksys WRT610 Dualband 2.4/5Ghz and i can only get 270Mbps for about 1 second before it stays connected at 130Mbps. I'm wondering if it's just an Intel/Linksys issue or lack of antenna, my signal strength is always Excellent!

    I notice these are cheap:

Suggestions, Ideas or people that have managed to improve there 5100 welcomed.

So it does not have any spare connecters?

Has anyone ever had an Intel 5100 connect at 270Mbps or the claimed 300Mbps, because i simply don't believe that the Intel card i have is capable of it, and i feel rather ripped off about it.

That thread wasn't so harsh on oxford, but i would be willing to listen any other suggestions. But if the 5100 cannot be improved, than i guess i will just have to live with it, but i may yet complain to Asus about the issues And demand an actual N speed capable card like the 5300, having said that i wouldn't spend one red cent on an Intel WIFi card again after the 5100.

    Thanks for the reply.

I dealt with OxfordTec heaps to the point where I help them out on testing (I don't this for any other company)
I can assure you OxfordTec is a reputable company.

They are run by humans and alas humans can make mistakes.
The above are isolated cases as others here have not had bad experiences but often this does not get recognised.

I've got an extra antenna from OxfordTec and placed in inside the hinge lid
It shipped out to NZ in a only a few days.
Now I can use 3 antenna WLAN cards.

The i5100 maxes out at 150Mbps with it's single stream

    Hello,

I have a Sony Vaio Z540 notebook and can confirm that I am getting the kind of speeds you are asking about with the Intel 5100 WiFi card and a WRT54GS Linksys "G" router. I have been holding off on purchasing an "N" router until the Draft spec is dropped. You can see the screenshots I've posted here...

I have the 5100 and am connecting to a Linksys WRT350N router. I can only connect at 54mbps with my HP dv4t while my roomate can connect at 130mbps with his HP tx2 series. I have 2.4 & 5.2 set to auto, as well as having 802.11n mode enabled under the device manager. I have tried updating drivers, but am told they are current. Is anyone else having this issue? Do you think it's just compatibility with the linksys router?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello,

A suggestion I have that you can try is to open your Network & Sharing Center - Click on View Status of your wireless connection - Click on Wireless Properties - Check Mark Intel connection Settings - Also in same box click on Configure and under Band Selection opt for 5.2GHz

As always... proceed at your own risk!

    Good Luck!

Thanks for the input Synchro. I followed your instructions, but I don't see the "Intel connection settings" check box under the Wireless Properties nor anything that says configure, but rather check boxes about when to connect to the network & and additional security tab with my encryption type. I'll keep looking, but I do appreciate the input! Thanks :)

Okay, it sounds like you went to the right place but here's some screenshots of what I'm talking about just to be sure. I circled what you should click in RED. If you find this setting, it may or may not help you with your problem.

You can also try downloading the Intel ProSet driver package for your specific card directly from the Intel website. A device manager update won't detect it. I downloaded version 12.2.0.11 for my 5100 card and it's been working great on a Linksys G router that I use. Prior to this I had 12.0.0.73. Keep in mind that it didn't matter to me if I lost any custom tweaks that Sony may have made with the original version that came with my notebook. Here's the direct Intel driver link to which OS you use with either the 5100 or 5300 Wireless Networking card but of course proceed at your own risk! Later.

I was in the right spot, but I don't have the last checkbox & configure button. I had updated my driver from intel, then HP, & I then I did a roll back to the same version as yours (12.2.0.0.11), but I still don't get those options. I am the administrator, so it shouldn't be that I don't have access. Anyway, the screenshots were helpful to let me know that I was in the right place, and once again thanks for the suggesstion. I'll keep on trying!

    Hi,

It could be that you only downloaded the driver package and not the whole software + driver package. There is 2 separate downloads. Also during setup, you have to select all of the sub-options on the install screen, i.e. administrator tools, etc. If you have 32-bit Vista, look for this driver with the management software (option #3). XP & Vista 32/ 64-bit all rolled into one (option #2). The Driver only (option #1).

I installed the software for my 64 bit version of vista, and I now have the configure option you showed (thanks!) The unfortunate news, however, is that I've played around with almost every configuration (combination of the wireless settings from mixed, 2.4, & 5.2 as well as the device manager advanced settings) and I can still only get 54mbps. In fact, when I switch to strictly 5.2GHz I can not connect at all. We have the encryption set to WPA & AES which boosted my roomates speed from 130mbps up to 270mbps (we also discovered that he has the broadcom card). It seems many users have had this problem with the 5100AGN card. HP Tech support was unable to fix the problem and suggested that it was likely a compatibility issue with the router, however, many people report the problem with a variety of other routers. Another thread (WRT300n (600n?)) talks about some possible fixes, but I'm starting to think it's hopeless. Anyway, I thank you once again for your suggestions, and will write a post if I ever get things sorted.

I just got a 4965AGN card to replace the rubbish dell 1500N/broadcom cards. I had two cards and they both were terrible, my videos would stutter ect(Tried two dlink N dual band routers). This new intel card seems to be doing the trick. Since my aging dell 9400 only had two antennae connectors i decided to try something, i stripped out the antennae from an old totally dead laptop and stock one into the 3rd connector. Loe and behold it almost double my wireless transfer rates at one of the worst spots in the house. So def connect the 3rd connector or find some cable lying around and solder it on.
