I have a new laptop with this wireless card, It does not pick up the N signal from my wireless network. I have a Linksys wrt160N router brand new also, I also tried it on my old Belkin PRE-N router. I am getting horrid download speeds & it always shows that its only picking up G signal. Does anyone know what can be done? I have set the router to N only, so it should be picking itup as N but it isn't.. Currently I am running anywhere from 1mbps - 24 mbps connections speeds. My pre-n system with old lappy usualy got about 108 mbps..

Make sure you have the latest firmware.

Also, set your security to WPA2. Just to prevent anyone from sharing your internet and bogging it down as well. Don't want that happening. ;)

this is for some reason typical of the card --> showing it is picking up G only on the laptop software.

Are you sure you have the router is set to N only? scifiMike is right about wpa2.. WEP is terrible security and on some wifi systems limits the speed to a max of 54mbps. Use WPA2-AES mode for best security and transmission rates with N.

What other settings are you using?

That's a single band router, right.

Make sure you have the "channel width" transmitting on 20Mhz & 40Mhz 0n the 2.4Ghz band.

4965AGN only gets the highest speeds in the 5GHZ range. I can only max out at 130Mbps in the 2.4 GHZ band. This is by design by intel. If your router is not dual band or can't do 5GHZ then that is your problem.

ok yes i have it set to N only & the wpa security as it only gave me that option. I dont know about the 5ghz I think it had 2.4 & something else but not 5gh.. OMG I cant find RUN on this stupid computer. Anyone know where RUN is on vista home premium? I never used vista b4 & am so dang confused. when i changed the band to 40 i lost all internet last time i was tinkering. okay i got into the settings it has an N transmission rate under advanced setings? When I changed this b4 I lost all net. its set at azuto but it goes all the way up to 130mbps at intervals.. i have security at wpa2 personal & its in tkip or eas encryption. its manually set to N only.. I just dont know what else to do. the Ghz is only 2.41 & 2.43??? isnt that strange? thats when I set it to 40 band radio thing.

Run is still in the start menu, you just have to go to Accessories to find it.

Or.. hit the windows KEY and R to get the run dialog. Vista has this cool new notion of search. Just pop open the start menu and type a partial name of what you are looking for and it will appear above the search dialog.

Anyway, if you do not have a 5GHZ capable router you are NOT going to get 270Mbps on an intel 4965AGN card ... period. The best you can hope for is 130 Mbps. Amazon had the linksys WRT600N on sale for $155 with free super saver shipping on Friday. Maybe its still on sale.

I can tell you that I went through two Dlink DIR-655's and they are supposed to be teh top rated. The first the Wifi circuitry crapped out 10 minutes in to turning it on. I mean fried. Wired worked but.... anyway, the second one the stupid setup CD claimed I was trying to set up a non dlink router and stopped. It connected but only at 130 Mbps. I didnt bother to tweak.

The WRT600N from linksys (154 from amazon with free super save shipping) got me 270Mbps out of the box on the 5ghz band. You can not be too far away. 270 Mbps is like within 20-30 feet after that it drops to 130 then 108 then 54....

ok. I am probably about 50-60 ft away but I am also a level above the router & its coming pretty much through a brick wall to me. Would I be better off staying with my Pre N I am wondering since i got like 108 or more with that on my old lappy? Only issue is this lappy only has xpresscard. the old card doesnt fit in it.. That setup is Belkin.. have had it over 2 years without too many major issues.

If your not within 20-30 feet I wouldnt bother spending the money on new N stuff. I am currently within 14 feet but through a floor to my router and I stay pretty solid at 270. It will fluctuate at times but when I kick in a large file transfer it stays 270 fairly well. If I walk about 25 more feet away it drops to 108 with fluctuations to 54.

If you can hold at 108 I dont see you getting any better unless you can drop a wire to your location and add an access point locally.
