I just bought a new Dell 1720 and upgraded to the Intel 4695agn card. I've bought a DIR-615 to use with it and 2 older laptops running with 802.11g cards.

Will the DIR-615 give me good results with the Intel 4695agn?

Any steps I should take with the new router first?

Will my older XP-Pro laptop use WAP-2?

    Thanks y'all.

You should get really good peformance w/ that combination. Whether or not the older laptop will work depends on the wireless card and it's latest driver updates. Some older cards have never been updated to support WPA2, but many have, like the tried and true Intel 2200bg. You'll have to check that out, but XP Pro can do it if the card can do it w/ the drivers available for it.

The typical steps you'd take w/ any wireless router, change the SSID, change the admin password, setup a WPA/WPA2 key (preferably generated from Steve Gibson's GRC website) or just create one as long (length) as you can stand. Beyond that, it would depend on anything else you were trying to accomplish (QoS needs, etc.), but you should be able to poke thru all the settings and see if you want to tweak anything else.

Thanks Chris! I'm going to be running 3 laptops on this network. My new Dell 1720 and a Gateway that is about 1 year old. They shouldn't be a problem I have an older Dell C640 that has a 802.11b card in it and is running XP-Pro. That 1 might be a problem

I have set-up 3 other home networks so I do have some experience. Thank God. I do pretty good for a 51 yr old fart. With 40 years experience in IT.

Anyways, I may have to settle for WPA because of the C640.

    Anyone else?

I assume your C640 has a minipci slot, if so, you can replace your B card w/ a BG, the Intel 2200bg is a good replacement that can be had for $30 or so...maybe less.

set your router on mixed g/n.........

go w/ wpa2, your xp will also be able to use it

go w/ at least a 20 character random string for the key....

after you get it set up, turn off your ssid......
